A DERELICT building in the centre of a Somerset town could be demolished and replaced with a new car park.

Residents of Shepton Mallet have grown accustomed to the 'eyesore' that is 14 Commercial Street, but plans have now been submitted to Somerset Council to knock down the disused building.

P. Bridgeman, who owns the building, has applied to demolish 14 Commercial Street and build a new car park in its place, including on the land behind the building itself.

If plans are approved, the former café, garage, and vehicle workshop premises will all be knocked down and replaced with a car park containing 50 spaces.

Existing pedestrian access to the High Street would remain, and so would the existing access to the site from Commercial Road - with some slight modifications including a new 1.5m wide footpath around the entrance.
