WESTON locals who are keen to show their commitment to tackling knife crime are encouraged to tie symbolic purple ribbons to the broadwork at The Grand Pier.

Residents can view Knife Angel at the Italian Gardens throughout May.

Designed by Alfie Bradley at the British Ironwork Centre (BIC), Knife Angel, a 27-foot-tall statue, has been created from blades confiscated by the UK's 43 police forces.

Its arrival to the Italian Gardens is the result of a successful bid by the North Somerset Violence Reduction Unit (VRU). It is hoped that this will help highlight the issue of violent crime.

A spokesperson from The Grand Pier said: "Have you seen the symbolic purple ribbons tied to The Grand Pier boardwalk?

"For this month only, the Knife Angel is in Weston-super-Mare.

"To showcase Weston's commitment to the Knife Angel's national anti-violence tour, members of the public are invited to tie purple ribbons to the boardwalk to remember those who have been impacted by knife crime.

"While the statue is with us, there’s a whole programme of activities that explain the dangers of knife crime, and share how you can keep yourself and your community safe."
