SOMERSET Day is fast approaching, and independent businesses in Taunton have clubbed together to celebrate in a unique and constructive way.

Susie Thomas, from Rocket and Bird gift shop in St James Street, has curated 'The Big Picnic Trail' as a way to showcase Taunton's independent businesses, and raise money for charity.

Launching on Saturday, May 11, and lasting until Saturday, June 1, the three week trail will take place across Taunton Independent Quarter and Bath Place.

Those hoping to take part can pick up their trail sheets from Rocket and Bird once the trail is underway, and will be asked to find pictures of 20-25 picnic food characters hidden in the windows of shops and businesses in the two areas.Somerset County Gazette: A poster for the Big Picnic Trail.A poster for the Big Picnic Trail. Once all the characters have been found, participants can hand their completed sheet back in to Susie to be entered in to a draw to win a hamper of prizes and goodies donated from the businesses taking part.

Entry costs just £1 and all money raised will be donated to Taunton Food Bank.

Speaking further on her idea for the trail, Susie said: "The idea of the trail is to celebrate Somerset Day, raise money for a very good cause but also to highlight the independent bricks and mortar shops and businesses in two areas of Taunton.

"It’s not an easy time for small businesses and this will hopefully improve footfall in a fun way, helping people discover shops and businesses they might not have found before.

"All of the pictures in the trail have been illustrated by me - as well as owning Rocket and Bird I am also a freelance illustrator. "
