LET’S, play, DARTS!

As part of the County Gazette’s 180th birthday celebrations, we are organising a county-wide darts tournament to raise funds for our charity partners, St Margaret’s Hospice.

The competition is open to anyone and everyone, of whatever ability, and to everyone who lives or works in Somerset.

The qualifying rounds will be held throughout June in pubs all over the county, with each pub and competition being publicised in the Gazette a week beforehand, with a full round-up of the event the week after.

Then, in late July, the finals night will be held, with the winners from the previous rounds in the pubs battling out to be crowned the Dart’s King or Queen of the county.

The Gazette’s Lee Irving, who is organising the event, encouraged both prospective darts players and venues to get in touch with him.

He said: “Everybody loves a game of the ‘arrers’, and what better way of raising money for such an inspirational cause than getting up to the oche? Darts is a great, fun, sport, and we are hoping to secure some big names for the finals night.

“We are the County Gazette, so people from all over can enter and we are hoping that everybody will really get into the spirit of things. It’s only £5 to enter, and all the funds raised will be donated to St Margaret’s Hospice.”

All of the money will be collected by the County Gazette as we seek to raise £180,000 for the hospice, which will be given to the charity at the end of the year.

Whatever the quality of the darts players, Lee added he thought there would be plenty of ‘one-hundred-and-eighty’ calls throughout the night.

He said: “It’s going to be a really great evening, contested in the true fun and friendly spirit of darts. We are organising a number of fundraising events for the 180 appeal – it really is a landmark anniversary and we want to suitably celebrate it by raising loads of money for one of the area’s greatest charities.”

For more information on the event, or if you want to be one of the host venues in the qualifying rounds, call Lee on 01823 365102 or email him on lee.irving@countygazette.co.uk.
