Yes, of all the teachers at Huish's he stood out as being a genuinely nice man. I can picture him now, wearing his gown over a light tweed jacket and also wearing his toothy smile. He really helped me get though English O-level. He was an excellent teacher.

Sad news, I am sure I speak on behalf of hundreds of lads who like me were taught by John at Huish Grammar School in the 1950s. They were far different times and I have fond memories of being taught by John, he was an excellent teacher who commanded respect.

Many years ago I was at a blood donor session at the old Corfield Hall in Taunton, lying back and enjoying my tea and biscuit, when I realised that the man lying next to me was Mr Harewood, my English teacher of decades before. At that time, I think, he was linked to St James' Church and it seemed that everyone who walked past stopped to speak to him. Eventually there were just the two of us and I turned to him and said 'I bet you don't remember me Mr Harewood'. He looked at me and without a second's hesitation he said '3C, Hannon M S'. I've told that story many times since! What a lovely man he was.
