MARY Junker, PE teacher at the former Weirfield School, Taunton, has died aged 87.

Born in Southampton, she studied at Junkers Institute in Denmark, where she met the late Rolf Junker, who was later senior PE master at the former Huish’s Grammar School, Taunton.

The two married in 1941 during the German occupation of Denmark, where their training work was a cover for recruiting resistance fighters.

They moved around Denmark with false names, and by 1944, when they had two children, they were forced into hiding.

After the war the couple came to England and by 1950 had settled in Wellington, where Mary originally taught at Court Fields and later at Stoke St Mary.

Rolf died in 1992 aged 83, and Mary kept fit and healthy for many years, visiting and holidaying around the world with her five children – Brita, Tordis, Halvdan, Nicolai and Karen.

She spent the past five years living with her son, Nicolai, and his wife at West Hatch and more recently in Camelot Nursing Home, near Wellington, where she died suddenly on December 28.

She leaves five children, 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral at Taunton Deane Crematorium was arranged by Taunton Funeral Services and Mrs Junker’s ashes will be buried next to her husband’s at Stoke St Mary Parish Church.
