Obituary: Mrs Eva Gadd (née Binding)
4:12pm Tuesday 22nd June 2010 in Obituaries
Mrs Eva Gadd (née Binding).
The funeral of Eva Gadd was held on Friday, June 11, 2010, at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bishops Lydeard.
Born, Eva Emily Mary Binding, in 1916, at Watchet, Somerset, Eva spent her whole life in and around several villages of West Somerset.
In 1940, at Stogumber Parish Chuch, Eva married her admirer, Leonard Gadd, whom she had known since her childhood.
The couple raised their two children, Brenda and Michael, settling the family, first in the village of Crowcombe and finally, in the village of Bishops Lydeard, where, after many years of loving marriage, Eva and Leonard celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary in the year 2000.
Nor was life’s good fortune bounteous for the stoical pair. At the early age of 21, Leonard lost an eye and spent much of the latter part of his life blind, whilst Eva became, in middle age, afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis and later Osteoporosis. No two people could have depended upon one another more. Yet, both bore their afflictions with great fortitude and generous nature, as those who survive them will attest.
Eva was an endearing and friendly person, who loved her family very much, as well as the company of friends and village people, with whom she could talk and learn of local events, which she could not witness for herself. It was her dismay, at last, to find so many of those contemporaries, who had shared her long life, were no more.
Eve and Leonard’s final days were spent in the secure surroundings and care of staff of Robins Close Nursing Home at Wellington, where in 2005 Leonard died.
Eva slipped away in a quiet sleep in her 94th year, to join Leonard again, in a joint plot at St. Mary the Virgin, to complete their long partnership in peace.
As a much-loved Great-Grandmother, Eva leaves her daughter Brenda, her son Michael, her grandchildren Mark, Paul, Ian, Jo and Karen, her great-grandchildren George, Ted, Gus, Gabriel, Nellie, Edie, Rosita, Sam and Max.
