Copyright Copyright is an intellectual property right that arises automatically on the creation of a work.
A work could be a book, a YouTube video, website content or photographs.
In order to qualify for copyright protection, the work must be original and recorded in some way i.e. written down.
Copyright protection prevents the unauthorised copying, reproduction and distribution of the work.
The author of the work is usually the owner of the copyright.
Copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years after death.
Potential Issues If you commission a third party to create or design something that would attract copyright protection e.g. a website, you do not own the copyright in the website unless there is an agreement in place specifying the copyright is assigned to you.
