Somerset in World Twenty20 bid
THE County Ground in Taunton could host World Cup cricket next year if Somerset CCC are successful in their bid to host the ICC Women's World Twenty20.
Women's cricket is one of the fastest growing areas of the game and the ECB has just released figures showing a 47% increase in the numbers taking part in cricket in 2007.
In a recent survey, Somerset was second only to Yorkshire in the number of clubs with women's and girl's sections.
Somerset have other reasons to be confident their bid will be successful.
Taunton was announced as the official home of England women's cricket' in August 2006 and last summer the town hosted the LV Women's County Championship for the first time.
The Women's World Twenty20 will take place over a week during June and is likely to feature eight teams including England, Australia, New Zealand, India and West Indies, plus two others.
In addition to the prestige that hosting such an event will bring to the club, Taunton itself is likely to benefit with all of the teams, their supporters, spectators converging on the town.
Also, all matches will be televised which will put Somerset on cricket's international map.
The club's chief executive Richard Gould said: "We are very keen to host this competition. We think that the County Ground is a great venue and by June 2009 the first stage of the redevelopment work will be completed and we will have a great facility for the teams to play on."
If the club is successful in securing the bid then all the matches would be hosted at the County Ground, which is likely to mean two per day, with the exception of the semi-finals and the final which will be played ahead of the men's matches in London.
Meanwhile, there is good news for Somerset fans regarding the progress of their three injured players.
Andy Caddick has resumed training following major surgery to rectify an ongoing back problem.
He said: "I went back to the Nuffield Hospital last weekend to see my surgeon who gave me the all clear to start training again which is great news.
"Since then I have been swimming every day. I am feeling OK and will be going back to see the surgeon for my next check up in six week's time, just before we fly out to Abu Dhabi for the pre-season tour."
Marcus Trescothick and Ben Phillips are also back in full training and took part in the squad net sessions at Taunton on Thursday morning.
