Title a long way off for Saints after second defeat

A RUN a ball 52 from Michael Coles set up Corsham for a deserved victory over Taunton St Andrews at the lovely Station Road Ground in WEPL Premier One on Saturday.

The defeat means that Saints are now staring down the barrel having started the season as title contenders. If a title push is to be considered then Saints cannot afford to lose any more games, having already lost their first two.

A home game against perennial title chasers Bath is hardly what the doctor ordered for this weekend.

On winning the toss, Corsham decided to bat and must have thought they made the wrong decision as Lloyd Alley made inroads into the top order to leave the home side 20-3.

When former Gloucester man Roger Sillence then fell at 58, the door was open.

However, skipper Coles and Neil Shardlow (32) compiled a 65 run stand and some steady batting in the lower order left Saints chasing 192 for victory.

This target was very achievable at Corsham with its large but fast outfield, where 230 seems to be about a par score. Mike Parsons (3-39) and Dixon Walsh man of the match Keith Parsons (4-37) were the pick of the visiting attack.

Saints reply started well and Mike Burns (28) and Keith Parsons (31) helped the score to 62-2. Burns then fell to Searle and Kevin Parsons was bowled by Senneck for a rare duck.

Wickets then fell at regular intervals with only Martin Jenkins (22) again showing any resistance, although young Tom Pitkin batted 75 balls for just six in a losing cause. Saints subsided to 138 all out in the 56th over to lose by 53 runs.
