Following the sudden death of Jake Gardner in a road accident near Stow in 2012, his family has been honouring his name by fundraising for farming welfare charity R.A.B.I.

Jake’s father, Simon, donned the ‘Daisy the cow’ suit at an open day event and recently ran the Oxford Half-Marathon, with his sister Jackie and brother-in-law Nev Cambray. That was part of an effort by the Cambrays to run four half-marathons in 2015, which has raised more than £1,000.

Jake was just 19 when he died. In the weeks and months after his death, his parents Simon and Jenny spoke to his friends and discovered that he had been planning to do some fundraising for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I), a charity which at the time they knew very little about.

Since then, the whole family has become involved in promoting R.A.B.I’s work whilst remembering Jake –a popular farmer who started his own agricultural business after attending Hartpury College.

Last year, a parade of 33 new and vintage tractors took to the roads in Guiting Power in Gloucestershire for a tractor run that raised more than £1,285. The family’s local pub, The Hollow Bottom, also entered a team of girls into the Edinburgh marathon and a recent Guiting Power bonfire night event raised more than £300. Donations from Jake’s funeral also went to R.A.B.I, taking the overall total donated to R.A.B.I to more than £6,800.

Jake was a country boy, typical of many Young Farmer members, who was never happier than when he was driving a tractor with his mates. He was just starting to establish himself as a contractor, doing general farm work, when his life was cut short.

Jenni Thompson, R.A.B.I’s regional manager for South Central, said: “Jake told friends that R.A.B.I was a charity worth supporting. There can be no better testimony for our charity, than to see Jake’s friends and family keep his memory alive by helping others right across the farming community. We are very grateful for their incredible and humbling support. ”

After completing her fourth half-marathon of 2015 in Oxford, Jake’s aunty Jackie Cambray said: “We had a fabulous run and I must admit to feeling quite emotional now that we have completed them all.”

In 2015, R.A.B.I gave out around £2m in grants to people from the farming world in financial need.
