A Cornish business is encouraging students into the land-based engineering industry by offering a £1,500 scholarship.

Vincent Tractors is working in partnership with Duchy College to offer one local student an amazing entry route into the sector that has great career opportunities due to the unique skills required.

The successful applicant will receive a work placement at Vincent Tractors, as well as £500 towards tools for their training on Duchy College's land-based technical diploma.

Last year the scholarship ran for the first time, and this year the successful applicant will study engineering with Duchy College whilst working at Vincent Tractors two days a week.

Matthew Hodge, sales and marketing manager at Vincent Tractors, said: "It’s great that we are able to offer this scholarship again.

“This year it has been a huge success and we hope that we continue to encourage more young people into the industry and bring more knowledge and skills into the company.

Managing director at Vincent Tractors, Paul Vincent, said: "Investing in talent has been consistently important to us over the last 50 years.

“The machinery might change, but high-quality engineering and customer service is what’s kept us here, so it makes sense that we help the next generation of local engineers to develop these skills too."

The course at Duchy College provides students with all the skills and experience they need to have a successful career as an agricultural engineer or to branch out into other fields such as becoming a plant engineer or off shore engineer.

Danny Sellors, lecturer on the land-based technical certificate level two, said: "I’m very pleased that Vincent Tractors have been able to offer this scholarship at Duchy College Rosewarne, It shows the close ties that the course has with industry.

"It’s also important as it raises awareness that it’s the industry chasing our qualifications, they have recognised a shortfall in young people wanting a career in agricultural engineering and are investing in their company’s future."
