Suckler Cows, Calves & Stock Bulls (202): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report the largest entry of the year for our catalogued May Sale saw a massive crowd around the ring. The trade reflected the excellent demand with very few outfits under £1000.

There were no real outstanding types and generally the best look better value for many than the second quality.

The bull trade topped at £3600 for a Charolais from Messrs C & R Currell. A younger Charolais realised £2500 for Messrs ET Summerfield & Son. Limousins to £2050 for Messrs MD & KE Lanfear and also for Messrs MJ & JA Pidsley. A 2007 born Hugginshayes bull sold to £1900 for Messrs CJ & JC Durston. Hereford bulls to £1500 for Fir Farms Ltd. Aberdeen Angus to £1550 for Mr A Taylor. Pure bred Limousin bull £1850 for Messrs DRJ & KF Laramy.

Cows and calves to £1800 for British Blue cross cow and Limousin bull calf for Messrs R & D Passmore, Bideford, when others sold to £1680 from the same vendor, who had Charolais cross cows and calves to £1500 x2 . Messrs S & N Farming had a 2009 born British Blue cow and calf to £1580. Tremendous demand for well fleshed Angus cows to £1460 for a 2004 born cow with AA steer calf from Messrs RJ & J Tilley, who had others at £1410. Messrs TE & J Middleton of Chulmleigh saw his AA cows and calves to £1370.

Another excellent run of young Hereford heifers with Angus calves from Messrs MJ Rogers sold to £1440, £1420, £1410 and £1380.

A run of 2 year old incalf heifers sold to £1100 for a British Blue heifer from Messrs MEJ & PJ White. North Devon incalf heifers £900 for Messrs DRJ & KE Laramy.

Prime & Untested Forward Cattle (101): UTM (97) and OTM (4): Prime Cattle Auctioneers Comments: Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an almost identical entry in terms of quantity at 101 head, which met another very similar trade, when demand was good and competition keen.

Top was 211.5ppk for a smart red Limousin from Messrs WJ & RA Alford, Craddock. Further shapely, suckler bred Limousin heifers at 208, 203.5 and 198.5ppk from Mr DGV & Mrs RG Crossman, Street. 198.5ppk was also bid on two further occasions for a black Limousin from Mr RG Palmer, Chard and a suckler bred Charolais from Mr L & Mrs F Maddock & Son, Wiveliscombe. The Maddocks sold another suckler bred Charolais at 194.5ppk. 194.5ppk was also received by Mr RP Tucker & Son, Middlezoy for a well fleshed black Limousin. Good conformation dairy bred heifers from Messrs AJ Gay & Sons Ltd, East Harptree rose to 192 (Limousin) and 191.5ppk (Charolais).

Steers topped at 210.5ppk for a very shapely, black, suckler bred Limousin from Mr DGV & Mrs RG Crossman, Street again. A high class run from Mr J & Mrs J Meaker & Son, Langport met calls of 210 (Limousin) 200.5 and 198.5 (Blues) 196 and 193ppk (Limousins). A shapely and well finished Blue from Messrs R & E Baker & Son, Cannington met a call of 197.5ppk. Angus steers with sire details rose to 194.5 and 192.5ppk from Mr PRS & Mrs EB Scott, Axbridge.

Steers sold to £1,370.09 for a shapely Blue steer (723kg) from Mr CJ Radford & Son, Tiverton. Other best heavyweight steers at £1,343.28 (Lim & 696kg) and £1,335.48 (Lim & 744kg) from Mr J & Mrs J Meaker & Son, Langport.

Heifers sold to a tremendous £1300 also at £1,300.73 for a 615kg Limousin from Messrs WJ & Mrs RA Alford.
