Hunterswood, opposite Dittisham and close to Dartmouth in Devon, is the former laundry to the historic Greenaway Estate, past home of Agatha Christie, and has direct access to the water.

Andrew Clague, Senior Partner of Clague, said: “Our work to remodel Hunterswood has resulted in a substantially enlarged house. It is an unashamedly contemporary style throughout that is sensitive and enhancing to the setting.”

The long, thin, and dark laundry was converted many years ago to a house and offered the new owners the opportunity to create a waterfront home in a nine-acre setting. The original home has been extended on the riverside where the driveway was. The driveway was moved to the rear of the building where it was originally.

The Clague redesign saw a new basement level cut into the existing, steeply sloping site, creating space for an indoor swimming pool.

A modern extension, conceived as a lightweight glass box, sits on the existing garden walls, allowing light to pour into the property’s open-plan living spaces. The gracefully designed mezzanine levels offer space for the owners to relax and admire Hunterswood’s breathtaking views.

Andrew Clague added: “Hunterswood is a study of sunshine, light and views. It is now a gorgeous house, exceeding the client’s expectations. Despite the very challenging structural work, due to the steep sloping site it sits upon, it’s one of the best pieces of Clague’s residential work.

“We were lucky to have an exceptional client and to work with a talented team.”

Other Clague projects shortlisted for the RICS awards include its work with the BBC’s DIY SOS programme on the redesign of a home for a Kent family with four adopted children, three of whom have very complex and life-limiting medical conditions, in Brambledown on the Isle of Sheppey. The project saw the demolition of a dilapidated bungalow and a new building to meet the specific needs of the family.

The firm’s work with Royal British Legion Industries to create 24 veterans’ apartments for the ‘Bravest of the Brave’ former military personnel, was also shortlisted for a South East award in the residential category.

If Hunterswood is successful in the RICS South West awards it will go forward to the national finals to be held in October in London.
