FRESH faces and regular sale goers were all attracted to the monthly antiques sale at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Taunton saleroom where nearly 500 quality lots went under the hammer.

A particularly attractive jewellery and watch section drew international interest and an internet buyer in the US bought a plain gold wedding ring for £380.

Top price of the day and the jewellery section was achieved for a Medieval iconographic gold finger ring of St George. Dating from the 15th to early 16th Century, this rare piece adorned the front page of the antiques catalogue and sold for £3,000.

A stunning pair of seven stone diamond 18 carat white gold ear studs sold for £1,500 closely followed by a dazzling opal and diamond cluster ring which went for £1,100.

Other notable prices in the jewellery and watch section included £900 for a gentleman’s Rolex wristwatch and £550 for a lavender jade and diamond ring.

Silver continues to perform strongly at Greenslade Taylor Hunt and the August sale was no exception to the rule. A canteen of silver Hanovarian flatware sold to a net bid for £1,700.

A large silver Armada dish by Mappin & Webb went to a room bidder with a call of £720, while a good pair of Victorian carved ivory handled silver fish servers sold for £550. A phone bidder was the successful claimant for a large silver art nouveau heart shaped dressing table mirror, which sold for £500.

In the clock section a large continental regulator style wall clock in the manner of Gustav Becker made £700.

An online bidder bought a portrait of the art historian Kurt Badt, in ink and grey washes, by Hermann Max Pechstein for £480.

Bookcases proved a popular purchase at the sale with a large and substantial oak bookcase cabinet making £450, while a George III style mahogany breakfront bookcase realised £420, and a pair of mahogany dwarf waterfall bookcases sold for £350.

Other prices of note in the furniture section included £550 for a George III small, oak chest of drawers, which sold for £550 to a net bidder.

An 18th Century comb back Windsor armchair achieved a pleasing £350, while an attractive Victorian carved oak box settle sold for £380.

A varied collectors’ section featured a cornucopia of delights. Notable prices included £300 for a range of assorted diecast models, £260 for two coronation ceremonial staffs and £240 for assorted pre-1920 silver Great Britain silver coinage.
