A BRONZE by noted Victorian sculptor Alfred Drury, a significant figure in the New Sculpture movement, is certain to be among the highlights at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s September sale.

Drury is best known for his statue of Sir Joshua Reynolds in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts. He also sculpted the figure of Prince Albert above the main entrance of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the bronze featured in next week’s sale is not to that scale, but is a delightful figure of a young girl. The bronze bust is of Elsie Doncaster, daughter of a friend of Drury.

The bronze is signed and dated ‘A Drury 1911’ to reverse, on an ebonised wooden base, 37.5cm high overall. It has a pre-sale guide of £400-£600.

The sale, along with the quarterly collectors sale, will be on view this Saturday, August 27, at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, from 9am-12.30pm. Viewing will also take place on Tuesday, August 30, and Wednesday, August 31, from 9am-5pm.

Another fine bronze that will feature in the sale is of a “Big Cat”. This fetching piece is in an Art Deco style and is guided at £300-£500.

In the furniture section an attractive Victorian Arts and Crafts style wardrobe with castellated top along with a matching bedside cabinet would make a marvellous addition to any home.

Two oak dressers, a pine dresser, and a number of garden benches and a set of chairs will also be included in the furniture section.

Clarice Cliff is a popular make in the saleroom and the September sale will feature a good collection of Clarice Cliff preserve pots. There is also an unusual Moorcroft vase. This example is a mere five and a half centimetres tall - so easy to find house-room for it!

The September sale takes place on Thursday, September 1, at 10am. It will be followed on Friday, September 2, by the quarterly collectors’ sale. This also gets underway at 10am. As ever this features a comprehensive and extensive range of items to appeal to all types of collectors.

A railway poster promoting the ‘sunshine and natural beauty’ of the Scilly Isles, is included in Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s sale, on Friday, September 2. Estimated at £100-£150 it will continue to provide a stress-busting vision of paradise for the successful purchaser.

Among the other railwayana on offer is a Great Western Railway cast iron bench, which is estimated at £200-£300. Railway year books stretching back to 1900, timetables and luggage labels, as well as a large collection of ‘OO’ gauge model railway locomotives and rolling stock, much of it also with a G.W.R. theme.

Among the toys is a tinplate tipping lorry by the German maker Hans Eberl which has a pre-sale estimate of £300-£400.

Sale catalogues will be available at the saleroom on the view days or can be downloaded from the website www.gth.net
