AUCTIONEERS Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a continued improved milk trade at the Michaelmas Collective Sale held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre junction 24, M5 on Tuesday, September 20.

Living up to her name was “Panda African Gold (VG85-2YR)” from Panda Holsteins prolific show wining family selling for 2500gns to John Yeoman of Shepton Mallet. Other heifers realised 1950gns for Terry Cox’s fresh heifer “Lamb Amazing Paula 109th” and first time consigners RA & SA Reed’s heifer “Allerways Eve 93rd”, there consignment of 5 heifers averaged an impressive £1833.00. At 1900gns was “Dinnaton Shottle Currency Total Eclipse” from regular consigners DC Dennis & Son Ltd.

The cow trade was the strongest for 12 months with a 3rd calver selling to 1900gns for KW & JM Hulbert Ltd’s red and white non registered cow. They sold 22 fresh cows and heifers as part of their ongoing herd reduction to average £1695.00. Also at 1900gns was PJ Andrew’s 2nd calver “Beneknowle Rampager Anne GP83”.

A large entry of Holstein bulls produced a 75% clearance topping at 1800gns for “Moorshard Editor” by “Elude” and out of the “Eroy” family.

The incalf heifer and youngstock trade continues to prove very selective with only the stronger, close to calving heifers in any real demand.

GR Vowles heifer “Hukay Bogart Twiggy 2nd” due in October sold for 1080gns and “Pitchbury Omax Jay 2nd” due in December for 1020gns for HM Heywood & Sons. Young well-bred bulling heifers from RA & SA Reed sold to 830gns for “Allerways Eve 106th” and “Allerways Frances 16th” by “Download” and “McCormick”. Yearling heifers from GJ Dalton’s youngstock dispersal sold to 800gns for “Bluejay Denali Maggie” and “Bluejay Goodwhone Cicero”. The day started with heifer calves from the “Bluejay” herd with “Grafeeti Della” selling for 480gns, she was from 11 generations of VG & Ex dams.

27 Vendors travelling from Cornwall to Kent and Pembrokeshire combined with 37 purchasers from across the South West and wales produced the following averages: 28 Calved Cows £1579.13; 60 Calved Heifers £1614.20; 7 Jersey Cows and Heifers £882.00; 8 Holstein Bulls £1056.56; 48 Incalf Heifers £842.63; 8 Served Heifers £740.00; 33 Bulling heifers £806.00; 28 Yearling and Younger Heifers £600.38; 29 Commercial Maiden Heifers £470.00; 17 Heifer Calves £365.00.
