Sheep (4403): Store Lambs (2760): A larger entry of 2760 store lambs sold to a mixed trade when the strongest were a touch easier in line with an easing finished trade. However the smaller lambs met a stronger trade. The best sold to £85 from Mr C Bennett. Ram Lambs sold as store lambs are to be declared. Those lots so declared to not contain any ram lambs, which are found post sale to contain undeclared ram lambs, will attract a 25% reduction in the sale price of any ram lambs found.

Grazing Ewes & Rams (1430): A nearly identical very large number entry of 1430 grazing ewes and rams sold to a stronger trade than expected, when lower prices were reported at other centres through last last week. Ewes sold to £125 for outstanding Texels from Mr JB Pearce & Sons, who sold others to £94 and £88. Other smart Texels sold to £98.50 and £87 from Mr RC Burrough & Sons.

Other ewes sold to £98 from Mr RA Willcox; £95.50 from Mr K Jones; £94 from Mr AC Heal and Mr SJ Govier; £93 and £85 from Messrs MJG & DE Richards; £90 from Mr PW Grant and £86.50 from TJ Rowland Farms Ltd. Mediums ranged £55-£70, plain £40-£55. Boners nearly all £22 plus. Overall average £53.74.

Breeding Ewes (89): A small entry of 89 breeding ewes before next week’s special sale, sold to a firm trade for the small proportion of better ewes forward. 6T Texels sold to £114 from Messrs EA Cox & Son and shearling Suffolk Mules sold to £112 from Miss V Greenfield and £107 from Mr J White. Overall average £88.30.

Fat Pigs (156): More fat pigs forward this week but very few better quality on offer. Best heavies to £130 from Mr FH Chave and £126 from Mr M Burnett from Cornwall. A good run from Mr CW Gibbins to £117 x2, £113 and £110 x2. Two good pens of medium weights from Messrs LE Miller & Son to £117 and £111. Number of coloured and second quality fat pigs sold to a difficult trade.

Store Pigs (202): A good run from Mr P Hughes to £61 and £54. Others to £54 from Mr P Clark. A good run from Mr R Lethaby to £51 and £40. Younger stores to £24 for 6/8 week old types from Messrs RJ & SJ Dare. Number of coloured and younger stores forward to a much harder trade.

Cattle with flesh really keenly sought. Plain types with time far exceeding our Saturday trade, without having to be pre-movement tested.

Top was 223.5ppk for a very well finished Limousin heifer (577kg) from Mr W Moore & Sons, Rackenford, who sold a very smart Angus (538kg) at 189.5ppk. Other well fleshed and good conformation heifers at 208ppk, Blue, Mr CJM Shackleton, Wiveliscombe; 207, 206.5 and 196.5ppk for Charolais from Mr JL, Mrs SM & Mr TL Armitage, Huish Champflower; 206.5 and 187.5ppk for a three quarter and half bred Limousins from Mr P & Mrs G Ford, Nempnett Thrubwell; 197ppk, Blue, Mr LC & Mrs AH Hoare, Clayhidon and 194.5ppk for a Limousin from Mr WJ & Mrs RA Alford, Craddock.

Steers rose to 195ppk for a good Angus from Mr NJ & Mrs HM Baker, Clevedon. Very lean, yet very shapely Blonde at 189.5ppk from Mr WJ & Mrs RA Alford, Craddock. Lightweight Limousin steers (520, 531 and 558kg) at 187.5, 186 and 184ppk from Mr R Chaddock, Glastonbury. A lean Limousin from Messrs GR Baker & Son, Cannington, achieved 185ppk, as did a Simmental from Mr R Binning, Draycott and an Angus from Mr NJ & Mrs HM Baker, Clevedon.

Heifers topped the day at £1,312.02 for a strong Blue from Mr LC & Mrs AD Hoare. A grand Limousin heifer from Mr GR Baker & Son returned at £1,310.35. The three quarter Limousin from Mr P & G Ford sold at £1,298.89, when his half bred Limousin returned at £1,215.00. The 577kg Limousin from Mr W Moore & Sons sold at £1,289.60.

The Charolais from Mr JL, Mrs SM & Mr TL Armitage achieved £1,220.42, £1,216.88, £1,216.44 and £1,117.80. A 548kg Blue heifer from Mr CJM Shackleton sold at £1,139.84.

Steers sold to £1,289.45 for an Angus from Mr NJ & Mrs HM Baker, who sold another at £1,173.90. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a reduced entry of 94 cull cattle met a very solid trade, particularly for the time of year. Bulls easier than of late but when best sucklers reach 156.5 and 154.5ppk, there really is nothing wrong with the trade.

Two superb Blue cows from Messrs M & T Underhill, Winkleigh reset the bar at 156.5 and 154.5ppk. A well fleshed Limousin from the same farm met a call of 127.5ppk, when a Simmental 117.5ppk and a Limousin 114.5ppk, also from the Underhills. Further good meat Simmentals at 125.5ppk, Mr R Binning, Cheddar and 115.5ppk, Mr P & Mrs G Ford, Nempnett Thrubwell. Charolais cows at 124.5ppk, Mr AS Cowling, Clatworthy and 124ppk, Mr CDG Cooper, Weston Super Mare. Mr Cooper also sold Herefords at 123 and 117.5ppk. A pure Devon from Miss V Jones, Brent Knoll rose to 118.5ppk.

Sucklers sold to £1,267.65 for the best type Blue from Messrs M & T Underhill, who sold another at £1,212.83 and a Limousin at £1,044.23.

Dairy breeds peaked at 122.5ppk for a full of meat Holstein from Mr A & Mrs R Hembrow, Stoke St Gregory, who sold other really well finished Holsteins at 114.5, 111.5 and 108ppk. Further best type Holsteins at 114ppk, Mr AD Lee, Wellington; 110.5 and 110ppk, Messrs House & Son, Chedzoy; 109.5ppk, East Avercombe Farm Ltd, Bishops Nympton and 108ppk, Denhay Farms Ltd, Bridport.
