Dairy Cattle (70): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much reduced entry saw a welcomed improved trade for the medium quality, as more potential purchasers lined up around the ring. Best quality maintained the high levels of recent weeks.

Best heifers to £1620 and £1480 for Adrian Ractliffe of Gloucester. Others to £1540 Messrs RM & LE Trott; £1520, £1500 and £1480 for Messrs BM Stephens & Son of Westbury on Severn, whose 2 year old heifers averaged £1500; £1500 for Mr NC Taylor; £1480 Messrs A & W Vigus; £1460 Messrs TA Hole & Sons and £1440 Messrs RC Dymond & Sons.

The best sold to £78 and £69 from Mr C Peach. Ram Lambs sold as store lambs are to be declared. Those lots so declared to not contain any ram lambs, which are found post sale to contain undeclared ram lambs, will attract a 25% reduction in the sale price of any ram lambs found.

Grazing Ewes & Rams (1239): An even larger entry of 1239 grazing ewes and rams when during the week many other centres reported very low prices. Trade was much stronger than anticipated helped by a large contingent of grazier buyers. Rams sold to £110 and £95 from Mr PG Keates. Others £94 from University of Bristol; £84 from Messrs AW Kingston & Son and £81 from Messrs WG Chave & Son. Ewes sold to £84 and £79 from Messrs H Curtis & Sons. Breeding Ewes (311): Another good entry of 311 breeding ewes sold to a steady trade, when scanned inlamb ewes achieved a premium. Suffolk cross Scotch halfbred inlamb ewes sold to £118 from Mr JC Salmon, who sold others at £116 and £110. Empty 2T’s to £108 from Messrs NF Clothier & Sons and £106 from Mr J & Mrs G Howieson.

Goats (45): Nannies sold to £54 and wethers sold to £42.50 all from Messrs DCW & DA Verney & Sons to average £42.36.

Stock Rams (106): A large entry of rams met a more difficult trade. Top of the day was a Suffolk ram lamb from Mr LAJ England to £250. 2T Charollais for Mr J Harding to £200 (x2) and £185 for Messrs NF Clothier & Sons.

PRIME Cattle UTM & OTM Clean & Young Bulls (84): UTM (79) & OTM Prime Cattle (5): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a shorter entry of 84 prime cattle met another very solid trade. Top prices remain exceptionally high and well ahead of deadweight quotes, which are reported to be falling away.

Top was 219.5ppk for a superb butcher’s heifer, 535kg and near pure Limousin from Mr W Moore & Sons, Rackenford. Wonderful Limousin cross cattle from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary, saw a steer (495kg) at 216.5ppk and heifers at 215.5ppk (543kg) and 211.5ppk (510kg). Further quality near pure Limousin heifers at 214.5ppk (578kg) from Mr P & Mrs J Ley, Alverdiscott and 207ppk (555kg) Mr CLM Shackleton. A run of well finished continental heifers from Mr AL Hobbs, Minehead sold really well at 209, 208.5, 202.5 and 200.5ppk. All 576 to 613kg. 207ppk was bid for another very good Limousin heifer (588kg) from Messrs W Moore & Sons again.

Angus steers to 193ppk from Mr NJ & Mrs HM Baker, Clevedon.

Steers sold to £1,321.20 for a 720kg Limousin from Mr ML & Mrs EE Edwards, Wick St Lawrence, who sold others at £1,235.25 (675kg) and £1,233.72 (707kg). £1,277.16 was realised by Mr HJ & Mrs HB Case Ltd, Highbridge with a 734kg Charolais.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a larger entry of cull cattle, which was mainly made up of very, very plain cows, sold to a better than expected trade for the time of year. Many non FABBL cows which would have benefitted from assurance and very few good meat cows, which when presented with assurance sold really well.

Cows rose to 129.5ppk for a smart red Limousin from Mr P & Mrs Ley, Alverdiscott, who sold another at 128.5ppk. A superb Devon, full of growth and flesh from Mr RM & Mrs BM Boundy, Winkleigh shot to 124.5ppk. A good meat Hereford from Messrs TJ Samways & Son, Crewkerne sold well at 117.5ppk. Other better type sucklers with assurance up to 115.5ppk. Those with some flesh 100ppk plus.

Sucklers sold to £1,071.95 for the best type Devon from Mr RM & Mrs BM Boundy. The strong Limousin cows from Mr P & Mrs J Ley achieved £998.45 and £997.15.

Dairy breeds peaked at 118ppk for a well-shaped and covered Holstein from Mr R & Mrs J Jones, Stogursey. Good meat, fed Holsteins from Messrs EW Clarke & Son, Martock met calls of 117.5 and 111.5ppk twice. A Friesian from Mr DJ, Mrs MJ & Mr PW House, Stoke St Gregory rose to 112.5ppk and 111.5ppk was bid again for a well fleshed Holstein from Mr AC House & Son, Thornfalcon.
