Dairy Cattle (89): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a massive November entry of fresh milk saw another improvement in the trade with a packed ringside. Trade for both cows and heifers reflected the recent talk of higher milk prices as we approach 2017.

3 pedigree heifers from the “Deri” herd of Messrs DR Evans & Co of Carmarthen led the way at £1880 and £1820 x2. Panda Holsteins saw their heifers at £1820, £1810, £1700 and £1620. A run of 14 British Friesian heifers from Messrs JD & SA Fear & Son of Thornbury sold to £1820, £1800, £1720, £1700 and £1640 to average £1504!!

Mr R Lewis of Carmarthen sold 9 heifers to £1700 and £1600. Mr DE Pyle £1690; £1680 for Mr R Popham and £1610 and £1600 Mr A Ractliffe.

Fat Pigs (105): Trade for fat pigs still strong when the best quality were in short supply. Heavy gilts to £132 for Peckmoor Farming. Other heavies to £131 and £119 for Messrs J & R Hopkins. Best also from Mrs JA Davies to £128 and £123 for Messrs FH Chave & Son. Others to £116 and £111 for Mr CW Gibbins from Honiton and £113 for Mr J Reason. Lighter types to £99 for Messrs RN & LA Bell and £98 for Mr TWT Palmer.

Store Pigs (77): Very few store pigs forward. Smart 12 w/o Pietrains for Mr A Thomas from Cornwall to £42 and £41. Other types to £34 for Mr D Pope from Buckinghamshire. Number of very young and coloured store pigs forward to a difficult trade.

Cull Sows & Boars (37): A good entry of better quality culls forward. A very good run from Peckmoor Farming to £198, £189, £176 x2 and £170. Others to £173 for Mr DH Turner. Boars to £146 twice for Mr B Watkins and also Mr White.

Breeding Pigs (15): Young smart Pietrain boar to £275 for Mr R Greenman. Inpig gilts to £140 and £136 for Mr R Greenman. Young inpig Duroc gilt to £130 for Mr A Thomas.

PRIME Cattle UTM & OTM Clean & Young Bulls (74): UTM (72) & OTM Prime Cattle (2): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a similar entry of 71 prime cattle met a faster trade. All classes of stock dearer as buyers secure cattle in time to hang and sell for Christmas.

Top was 229.5ppk for a very shapely, nicely fleshed, 514kg, red Limousin steer from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary, who sold other similar, handy weight steers (562 and 600kg) at 217.5 and 202.5ppk. Another handy weight steer (533kg) again being a very shapely but this time lean red Limousin achieved 209.5ppk from Messrs AJ Hepper & Son, Blue Anchor, who sold others similar at 201ppk twice and 199.5ppk twice, 196.5ppk and a Blonde at 200ppk. A shapely, covered red Limousin from Mr MW & Mrs S Edwards, Congresbury rose to 202.5ppk. Fasted Blonde steer at 199ppk and a fasted Limousin at 198.5ppk from Messrs G Vauden & Son, Bristol. Shapely black Limousin steer (635kg) met a call of 199.5 and 196ppk from Messrs W Johnson & Son, Dalwood and a top drawer Blonde steer (U+4L) at 195.5ppk from Mr RG Speed, Axminster.

Steers sold to £1,452.70 for a very smart Blonde from Messrs G Vauden & Sons. Top 10 steers all £1,315.73 and up.

Heifers topped at 214.5ppk for a shapely and again nicely covered Charolais (553kg) from Mr JL, Mrs SM & Mr TL Armitage, Huish Champflower, who also sold a good R4L Blonde at 204.5ppk (537kg) and a similar Limousin at 199.5ppk (530kg).

Barley Blues from Mr SER Hunt met calls of 213 (535kg) 198.5 (517kg) and 190ppk (495kg). A shapely and well covered black Limousin (545kg) from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son shot to 209.5ppk. A similarly shapely yet leaner Blue (537kg) from Messrs CJ Radford & Son, Tiverton rose to 199.5ppk. The same price was received by Messrs W Johnson & Son, Dalwood for their similar conformation and finish black Limousin (510kg). A heavier heifer (611kg) from Messrs W Moore & Sons, Rackenford sold well at 190.5ppk.

Generally a real shortage of best type “shop” heifers. Buyers are crying out for well bred (R grade and better) nicely finished (3 and R4L, 4H if really good shape) handy weight heifers (520 to 600kg) suitable for the butchers trade. 190 to 215ppk liveweight represents an excellent price and many more heifers are wanted to satisfy demand.

All the top 20 steer and heifer prices were again under 687kg. One other steer at 677 and after that the remaining 18 were 495 to 617kg. 650kg is the upper target to maximise buyer support and hopefully profitability.

Heifers sold to £1,195.43 for a Fleckvieh from Mr CE & Mrs BD Bailey, West Chinnock. This heifer met a call of 172.5ppk. How many sharp Holstein heifers rise above 115 ppk. The Fleckvieh is a breed worthy of very serious consideration when planning replacements. Five other heifers over £1,112.54.

Be Farm Assured, aim for R grade or better. Try to finish between 500 and 650kg. Heavier steers should be sold below 760kg but know your food costs if you are going to keep cattle longer to gross over 650kg.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much larger entry of cull cattle at 152 met a good trade for those with flesh. A lot of very cold cows with little flesh to excite buyers, sold to a workmanlike trade.

The best were very well sold to 141.5ppk for a top drawer red Limousin cow from Messrs C & S Partridge, Calverleigh. A young Charolais from Mr PR Rawle, Parracombe hit 136.5ppk. A nice meat Simmental from Messrs MJ & Mrs KM Boucher, Axbridge rose to 127.5ppk. Native cows peaked at 117.5ppk for an Angus from Mr DM Ruell, Clatworthy.

Very best non-assured cows to 115.5ppk.

Sucklers sold to £1,098.04 for the superb Limousin from Messrs C&S Partridge. £1,021.28 was received by Mr MJ & Mrs KM Boucher. Charolais cows at £984.70 and £945.95 from Mr AS Cowling, Clatworthy and Mr PR Rawle respectively.

Dairy breeds rose to 122.5ppk for a young, well fleshed Holstein from Messrs RB Bowditch & Son, Bridport, who sold other good meat, younger Holsteins at 112.5ppk, 111.5ppk and 110.5ppk. Other younger, better covered Holsteins at 115.5ppk and 113.5ppk from Messrs Finefarm Ltd, Otterhampton and Mr RM & Mrs HJ Herrod, Axminster. Six year old Holstein, well fleshed at 110.5ppk from Mr SJ Perry, East Worlington. Good meat types 100ppk to 108ppk. Steakers 90ppk. Very plain types below and if small and frail, only at very low monies.

Dairy breeds sold to £908.38 for a good Holstein from Mr SJ Perry, who sold others to £875.16. £903.46 was received by Mr RM & Mrs HJ Herrod for their best Holstein. Many others just over and approaching £800.
