Prime Cattle (178): UTM (150) & OTM Prime Cattle (28): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a tremendous entry of cattle for our 10th South West Winter Fair, definitely the best yet, met a cracking trade.

Top was 526.5ppk (£3,101.09) for the Supreme Champion from Mr WJ Bown, Catcott, being a 19m Limousin heifer weighing 589kg which was bought by Darts Farm, Clyst St George. Reserve Champion at 453ppk (£2,500.56) was a 17m Blonde heifer weighing 552kg from Mr SJ & Mrs JB Clatworthy, Highbridge and was bought by Puxton Park Ltd, Weston. Next best at 309.5ppk was a young 8m Devon steer from Mr S & Mrs G Phillips, Chumleigh and bought by Mr H Pratt, Huntsham. 299.5ppk was bid twice. Firstly for the Beef South West Champion, a 16m 592kg Limousin heifer from Mr E Davies, Ilminster, who sold to Mutch Meats, Witney. Then again another 16m 555kg Limousin heifer from White House Farm Partners, Henley. The Clatworthy’s scored again at 279.5ppk for their 19m Limousin steer (554kg) to Court Farm Butchers Puriton, Puriton Park, Weston bought again at 264.5ppk for a 679kg Limousin steer (17m) from Mr DE & Mrs SJ Cheacker, Pilning. 259.5ppk was bid by Mutch Meats for a 19m Blue steer from Mrs L Calcraft, Payhembury. Mutch Meats bought again at 254.5ppk for a 11m Limousin from Mr DE & Mrs SJ Cheacker. The Cheackers sold again at 254.5ppk for a 17m Limousin heifer, also to Mutch Meats again.

Tim Potter & Son & Daughter Ltd, Butchers of Wellington also bought at 254.5ppk for a 20m Limousin heifer from Mr GS Briggs & Son, Ash Priors. 251.5ppk was achieved on three occasions. Twice bought by Mutch Meats for a 17m Limousin steer from Mr R Kingston, Crown Inn, Catcott and for a 19m Limousin steer from Mr SJ Blake, Uplowman. The third occasion was an 18m Charolais heifer from Mr R Kingston again, which sold to Palmers Quality Butchers Ltd, Weston Super Mare, who also bought an 18m Limousin heifer from Mr DE & Mrs SJ Cheacker again. Tim Potter & Son & Daughter Ltd of Wellington bought again at 249.5ppk for a 15m Limousin heifer from Mr GS Briggs & Sons again.

After the champion and reserve top pounds per head was £1,795.96 for a 17m 679kg Limousin heifer from Mr DE & Mrs SJ Cheacker. Mr E Davies’ Limousin heifer returned at £1,773.04. Other 600kg heifers achieved £1,516.33 for a Charolais from Mr AF Cook, Ivybridge; £1,487.64 and £1,482.20 Blues from Mr SJ & Mrs JB Clatworthy; £1,457.47, Limousin from Mr WJ Bown and £1,357.28 for a Limousin (544kg) from Mr GS Briggs & Sons, Ash Priors.

Show Lambs (184): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a good number and superb quality entry of 184 show lambs sold to a much dearer trade compared to last year. The overall championship was won by Messrs P & C Houldey with Beltex lambs that sold for £240/head (545ppk) purchased by The Butchers at Darts Farm, Exeter.

The Reserve Champions were also exhibited by Messrs P & C Houldey and sold for £190/head (442ppk) to John May Family Butchers of South Molton. Other quality show lambs sold to £120 (308ppk) £115 (213ppk) and £102 (222ppk) from Messrs P & C Houldey; £115 (288ppk) and £110 (239ppk) from Mr RB Cox; £111 (278ppk) from Mr AGF Lockyer; £108 (x4) (257 x2 and 240ppk x2) and £105 (205ppk) from Messrs SJ & JB Clatworthy; £110 (183ppk) from Messrs WGF Chave & Son and £108 (212ppk) from Messrs P & L Calcraft. Overall average £91.30 and 211.55ppk.

Non Show Lambs (992): A larger number entry of 992 non show lambs sold to an overall dearer trade for the handyweight lambs but generally easier for the heavier types. The best sold to 182ppk from Mr RB Cox. Others 178ppk from Messrs MA & SS Sanders, Messrs JPT & BM Scott and Messrs AG Hicks & Sons; 176ppk from Messrs AJ & WL Turner Ltd (x2) Messrs DM & DM Ginger, Messrs SE & BS Wrixon, Messrs SGE Hatch & Son and 175ppk from Mr LM Baker and Mr ME Goodall and Mr CJ Sage.

Heavier lambs sold to £87.50 (x2) and £83.50 from Messrs DG & RH Matravers. Others £86.50 from Messrs DL & ME Gillard; £85, £83 (x2) and £82 (x3) from Messrs J Sprake & Partners; £83.50 from Mr RB Cox; £83 and £82 from Messrs MB & CJN Ayre and £82.50 and £82 from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd. Overall average £77.83.

Carcass Lambs (19): A fantastic quality entry of carcass lambs this year met a lively trade which was much deserved. The Champion achieved the top call of £160 from Mr SA Norman, closely followed by the Reserve Champion at £152 from Mr PJ Houldey. Other good types to £122 from Mr RB Cox and £120 from Mr J Buckler and Messrs SJ & JB Clatworthy.
