Dairy Cattle (66): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a remarkable entry for a New Year’s Eve market, enhanced by an informal Show and Sale for regular Saturday consigners, which was ably judged by Harold Lukins and his granddaughter Hannah. The Champion heifer from Messrs M & K Churchill & Son realised £1700, as did the Reserve Champion from Messrs FG Summerhayes & Son, who then had two further heifers at £1760 for a Leswidden bred heifer and £1720. Ironically the same vendors topped the last market held here in 2015 and their five heifers averaged £1642. Two robot milked heifers from Messrs A & JE Fewings’ Keevil Pedigree herd sold for £1700 and travelled to another robotic milked herd. Others to £1640 for Nick Goss; £1560 Messrs J & A Hole and £1540 for Mr EAS Reeves & Sons’ British Friesians.

The Champion cow from Michael Powell realised £1200 when the Reserve Champion achieved £1300 from Messrs Ham Farm Partners. Shorthorn cows to £1180 for Messrs PW & JA Bevan & Son, Abergavenny.

A better calf trade saw Shorthorn x calves to £340 and Holsteins to £240 x2 Messrs RW Gilbert & Partners.

Store Cattle, Sucklers & Stirks (111): Store Cattle & Grazing Cows (55): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a seasonal entry of 55 strong store cattle, part of 111 with the stirks, met a cracking trade. Plenty of buyers in attendance for the number on offer!

Steers topped at £1270 for a forward Simmental from Mr JH, Mrs MB & Mr DJ Jewell, Durston. An overage Charolais steer (31m) from Mr WJ Reed, Chittlehampton hit the £1000 mark.

Native steers rose to £950 for 28m Herefords from Mr WJ Reed again. A price of particular note was £905 for 19m Angus steers with sire details from Mr HT & Mrs ME Quick, Ashill.

Dairy bred steers rose to £945 for a 23m & FA MRI from Messrs IF Ford & Partners, Elberton, who sold another 24m & FA at £880. 22m and 24m Holstein steers (FA) from the same farm achieved £720 and £710.

Heifers topped at £960 for a Blue (23m & FA) from Messrs CG & WL Rich & Son, Yarcombe, who sold a Blonde (24m & FA) at £940. 30m Limousin heifer (FA) at £905 from Messrs RS Spiller, Stockland, who sold others 23/26m & FA at £870.

Native heifers rose to £955 for Angus (18/21m, FA, sires) from Messrs CG & WL Rich & Son again, who sold another (20m & FA) at £925.

Busk Calves & Stirks (56): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a reduced Christmas entry of 56 was met by a strong trade and when many more could have been sold to advantage. Few top quality cattle forward, when the best sold to £680 for a 9m Limousin steer from Mrs S Linford, who also made £565 for a 10m Limousin heifer. British Blues to £615 for a 7m steer from Messrs DJ Hill & Partners and a consignment from Messrs AW & SA Meikle saw a bunch of Devon steers (8/9m) to £550, a pair of Blue heifers to £550 (8/9m) and a 9m Montbeliarde to £615. More expected next week.

Sheep (1707): Store Lambs (851): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a small entry of 851 store lambs sold to another very strong trade for all but the very small sorts, which were generally more difficult. The best sold to £76.50 from Messrs P Coombs Ltd; £75.50 and £68 from Messrs L & F Maddock & Son; £73.50 and £73 from Mr G Nichol; £72.50 from Mr M Taylor; £69.50 from Messrs L Habberfield & Son; £69.50 and £68 from Messrs Howetown Farms and £68.50 from Messrs J & P Prideaux. Mediums ranged £55-£65, very small nearly all £30 plus. Overall average £57.13.

Ram Lambs sold as store lambs are to be declared. Those lots so declared to not contain any ram lambs, which are found post sale to contain undeclared ram lambs, will attract a 25% reduction in the sale price of any ram lambs found. Similarly Cryptorchids are to be declared.

Grazing Ewes and Rams (586): A larger entry of grazing ewes and rams than expected at 586 head sold to an overall easier trade for all presented. The best sold to £90 and £80 from Mr WHC Inder; £84 from Messrs P Coombs Ltd; £83.50 and £78.50 from Messrs PB & SE Dibble; £82.50 from Mr CA Churchill, £80.50 from Mr D Pengelly, £78.50 from Messrs M & R Vellacott and £77.50 from Mr SG Yates. Mediums ranged £54-£68, plain £42-54, boners nearly all £20 plus. Overall average £54.02.

Couples (53 Ewes and 82 Lambs): More couples forward, being 53 ewes with 82 lambs at foot, sold to yet another strong trade. However buyers able to be slightly more selective. Best doubles to £215 (£71.67/life) and £195 (£65/life) from Messrs BG & DE Howell. Others to £190 (£63.33/life) and £188 (£62.67/life) from Messrs DE & SJ Cheacker. A good bunch of 5 ewes and 9 lambs from Messrs PG & K Smith sold to £192 (£68.57/life). Best singles to £145 (£72.50/life) and £135 (£67.50/life) from Mr M Biss. Overall average £60.96/life.

Breeding Ewes (95): A good run of 95 breeding ewes sold to £110 (x4) for in lamb Masham shearlings and Suffolk shearlings from Mr J Salmon.

Goats (29): An entry of 29 good quality goats sold to a flying trade when strong nannies sold to £104.50 from Messrs RG, AJ & JA Habberfield to average £71.74.

Orphan Lambs (11): 11 orphan lambs forward, sold readily. Older, nearly weaned sorts to £30 (x2) from Mr M Biss. Young and small lambs to £13 (x8) from Mr D Pengelly.

Prime & Untested Forward Cattle (70): UTM (67) & OTM Prime Cattle (3): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a medium entry of prime and forward untested cattle met a flier. A totally insufficient entry in terms of throughput saw buyers compete hard to secure supply.

Top was 216.5ppk for a very smart, lean red Limousin heifer (578kg) from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary, who also sold a similar red Limousin steer (640kg) at 212ppk and a good slightly thicker red Limousin steer (607kg) at 203.5ppk. Best butchers’ heifers were in exceptional demand at 214.5ppk for a 558kg Limousin from Mr TV & Mrs E Wotton, Newton Abbot; 213.5ppk for a 528kg Charolais from Mr L & Mrs F Maddock & Son, Wiveliscombe and 207ppk for a 535kg red Limousin from Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mr MR Popham, Highbridge. Feeding Limousin heifer (494kg and 20m) at 198ppk from Mr RE Webber, Bridgwater. Many smarter heifers 190ppk plus. A run of quality Limousin steers from Messrs AJ Hepper & Son, Blue Anchor achieved 209ppk (598kg) 208ppk (665kg) 201.5ppk (614kg) and 199.5ppk (680kg). A butchers’ steer (540kg, 21m and Charolais) from Mr L & Mrs F Maddock & Son again shot to 203.5ppk. Stronger supermarket weight steers from Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mr MR Popham, being smartly clipped out, achieved 200.5ppk (723kg) and 198.5ppk (643kg). A very, very shapely, yet very lean steer at 199.5ppk from Mr BA Richards, Williton also hit the 200ppk barrier. All top price steers under 680kgs. Don’t feed cattle to heavier weights for reduced profit.

Steers sold to £1449.62 for a 723kg Limousin from Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mrs MR Popham. Another over £1400 at £1406.75 was a 727kg Blonde from Mr AJ Hepper & Son. 725kg is about as heavy as steers need to be. Above that weight is more work and expense for less money.

Heifers sold to £1276.36 for a 643kg Limousin from Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mr MR Popham. £1263.50 was received by Mr D Curtis, Street for a 700kg Blue heifer. Handyweight heifers at £1251.37 (578kg) from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe and £1196.91 (558kg) from Mr TV & Mrs E Wotton. Several heifers £1100 plus looked well sold.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very short entry of cull cattle met a flier. Cows are going to be in very short supply this spring as the milk price rises. As one observer said “cows are worth more per litre than per kilo.” Those cows on offer, having been in for some months, are now being presented in good flesh.

A shortage of sucklers, as is usual at this time of year when most Vendors have drawn culls before Christmas to make housing room, sold exceptionally well. A leaner red Limousin (75m) from Mr FR & Mrs DJ Butt, Dunkeswell Abbey achieved 120.5ppk. A younger Angus cow (47m) met a call of 119.5ppk for Messrs AK & G Quinn, Taunton. Three quarter meat Simmental cows from Mr JB, Mrs MB and Mr DJ Jewell, Durston and Mr NH Julian, Skilgate each met a call of 117.5ppk. A very lean Charolais (57m) from Messrs Hutton & Sons was bought to feed at 116.5ppk.

Cull bulls sold to £1048.73 for a Simmental from Mr S & Mrs C Fry, Wareham.
