Dairy Cattle (74): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report another large entry of fresh milk to start the year saw a much more selective trade this week, compared to the flying trade of last week.

The top end still attracted the most interest, when second quality was probably £100-£200 down on the week. £1300 would have secured some very useful heifers and they look very good value against expensive imported heifers!

The best heifers to £1720 for a pedigree ‘Keevil’ heifer from Messrs A & JE Fewings, who had others at £1650 and £1460. £1700 Messrs M & K Churchill & Son and £1670 Messrs LG Bagg & Partners. £1600 for a Littlebredy bred heifer from James and Christine Miller and £1510 Mr FE Luff.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 97 cull cattle met another superb trade. Trade again much improved from that of before Christmas. Barren cows are going to be very short this spring and that will create the perfect conditions to sell liveweight.

Top was 143.5ppk on two occasions firstly for a Charolais cow (68m & 632kg) from Mr HWC & Mrs JM Butler, Bristol. The same price was achieved by Mr MR & Mrs SK Westcott, Porlock with an Angus cow (93m, 808kgs & sire) who also sold others at 139.5 (45m, 775kg & sire) and 138.5 (130m, 718kg & sire). Hereford cow at 134.5ppk (43m & 690kg) from Mr R Bigwood, Burnham on Sea. Better sucklers 120 to 125ppk.
