AN unusual needlework sampler is to be sold by Lawrences Auctioneers of Crewkerne.

This sampler was made to commemorate the worst Lifeboat disaster in RNLI history. In 1886 a Ship called the ‘Mexico’ left Liverpool and was caught in a storm. Two lifeboats from Southport and Lytham St Annes were launched to rescue the crew, but tragically both boats were capsized and 27 of the 29 crew drowned leaving 16 Widows and 50 children without a father.

A public appeal was launched to help the people and it was supported by many people including Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm.

This sampler includes photographs of two members who were lost, the memorial erected in their memory and a poem in the centre titled the ‘Warriors of the Sea – a Lifeboat Story’.

Lawrences' Auctioneer Simon Jones said, ‘This is a remarkably important sampler which highlights a human disaster from the Victorian period. Unusual samplers are always highly sought after by collectors and we are expecting keen interest. Its relevance to Southport and Lytham should ensure that there is determined interest from collectors in Lancashire. It is a fine tribute to the bravery of many men and it is wonderful to see that it has been so well looked after.’

The sampler will be sold in Lawrences May Collectors Sale, on Friday, May 12. It is expected to make £1,200-£1,500 in auction. For further enquiries contact Simon on 01460-73041.
