THE auctioneers at Greenslade Taylor Hunt have an eye for the interesting and unexpected and today’s (Thursday) monthly antiques sale offers a delightful selection of tempting wares for sale-goers.

However, for those hoping to get their hands on a striking pair of Chinese vases, a Bag for Life will not cut it to take away this impressive duo.

The mighty pair, helpfully described in the Greenslade Taylor Hunt catalogue as “extremely large”, are a towering six foot three inches high (190 cms).

They will go under the hammer today (Thursday, May 4) at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton. They are guided at £200-£300.

Books, documents and maps have a prominent section in this sale. Around 100 lots will be included. Among the highlights is a limited edition Italian book of Venice and its canals.

Dating from 1890-91 it is edited by Ferdinando Ongania in 10 parts, with original paper wrappers, it contains 96 plate illustrations. It has a pre-sale estimate of £300-£400.

A beautiful Lalique glass bowl is likely to be another highlight at the auction. Decorated with swimming fish and etched R Lalique France to the base it is guided at £400-£600.

The sale commences at 10am.
