Despite it being “out of season” for selling, when cattle have already been sold out of sheds or those remaining are turned away to grass, the trade is so strong Vendors must consider whether waiting until the Autumn, when everybody will be selling, is the right strategy. It is worth considering whether they should sell some now and give more grass to the remainder so they do better.

Suckler Cows, Calves & Stock Bulls (346): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a record entry saw a record crowd and a record trade. 330 lots sold before an outfit sold under £1000!!. Cattle were drawn from all over the South of England and Wales and every outfit sold. The sale commenced with 25 stock bulls keenly sought with the Charolais breed leading the way. A Dorset born Balbithan bred 2 year old sold for £3400 from The Victorian Barn. Another Balbithan bred 18 month old bull from Mr DT Daniel, Launceston, Cornwall sold for £3400. Purebred Charolais (3 years old) to £2650 for Woolcotts Farm. 2009 born Limousin bulls to £2600 Mrs ER Whitcombe. Others to £2500 for a Nealford bred Limousin from The Victorian Barn, who had 2015 born Herefords to £2000 and £1550. Simmental bulls to £2350 Mr R Bigwood. Pure bred British Blues to £2550, £2200 and £2100 for Mr JA Naish. Blonde bulls £2200 Messrs GH & MG Barber. Aberdeen Angus to £2250 Messrs DK, MJ & N Parris. Other Herefords to £1800 Fir Farm Ltd, Gloucester.

The cow and calf trade was the best ever seen. Well supported by several dispersals including the dispersal of mostly continental cows with Blonde x calves for Greenham Bros, Chippenham, Wiltshire. They topped the sale at £2480 for British Blue x cow with heifer calf. Blonde x cows to £2020 and £1840 from the same vendor who had Limousin x cows with steer calves to £2000.

Mr WR Earp had a grand consignment of Blonde x cows to £2420 with steer calves at foot. The same vendor had Charolais x to £1980 and £1900 again with steer calves. Other Limousin x cows 2006 born to £2000 for Mr N Skelton. Numerous good continental x cows and calves between £1600 and £1800.

The native cow trade was also on fire with strong demand for young first calved Hereford and Angus heifers with continental calves at foot. Best Hereford x with calves to £1740, £1700 and £1620 for Mr R Bigwood. His Angus x hfrs with calves sold to £1520. Ruby Red Devon cows and calves sold to £1350 for Mr DT Daniel, Launceston.

Busk Calves & Stirks (206): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a similar sized entry to last week was met by an even stronger trade for all on offer. Quality was mixed with few top grade cattle forward. Top price to Mr GS Boobyer for a 12m Limousin steer which made £1020 and a second to £938, well done. A smart consignment from Mr A Blowers of Bishops Nympton made £930 for a 14m British Blue steer with others to £875 and £860. A pretty entry of Simmentals from Messrs R & J Cook saw a steer (9m) to £845 and 11m old heifers to £825 and £725. A Sussex steer from PJ Masters Farms to £790. Few Charolais forward, best price £770 for a 10m steer from Mr P Attwell with a second to £760. Mr RG Tucker saw Bazadais to £730 (7m). A good trade for Devons at present when 13m steers sold to £725.

Heifers a fantastic trade and one of the dearest for some time. In addition to Messrs R & J Cook’s Simmental at £825 there was also a good run of British Blues again from Mr A Blowers which made £805 (4m) £780 and £755. Charolais to £765 from Mr RN Darch (13m). Other Simmentals to £750 (12m) from Mr M Middle and Devons to £732 (15m). Anything with shape sold extremely well.

Another good trade for Friesians with many in the £380-440 bracket. More could have sold to advantage. Thanks all for your continued support.

Fewer coloured pigs forward with a predominance of commercial breeds on offer, which sold to a huge crowd of farmer and trader buyers, which ensured competitive bidding from start to finish. Heavier weight pigs in particular demand.
