MORE than 90% of items were snapped up at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s quarterly collectors’ sale at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

No mean feat as the sale encompassed everything from coins, medals and militaria to postcards, Churchill memorabilia and mechanical music.

An early inkling of how things were likely to pan out was heralded when the first lot – assorted Great Britain coinage fetched £1,300 from a room bidder.

The price edged up as a result of the good condition and rarity of some of the coins included in the lot.

Interest remained constant throughout the sale as an attractive HMV table grand gramophone with lumiere pleated diaphragm, which was one of the last lots to come under the hammer, was bought for £1,525.

Once again postcards were a fine feature of this sale put together by auctioneer Peter Rixon. A family album featuring 500 cards including photographic views went for £650 to an online bidder.

A considered collection of Churchill memorabilia from Grace Hamblin, Sir Winston and Lady Clementine’s private secretary achieved notable prices. An iconic black and white portrait signed and dated by Winston Churchill sold for £1,000 to an online bidder.

A British 1827 pattern Naval officer’s sword along with a British 1897 pattern midshipman’s dirk went for well over their estimate at £550 again to a room bidder.

An historically important slave census from 1827 fetched £500 from a commission bidder.

A play worn example of a Dinky Guy Van “Weetabix” made £300. It was in the rarest of the six liveries produced by Dinky.

The second instalment of the sale of assorted Formula 1 cars did not disappoint. Collectively the hammer price was just under £2,300.

Further examples from this single owner collection will feature at the next specialist sale on Friday, September 8.

If you cannot wait until then the auctioneers will be running a timed online only collectors sale in early July. Please contact the saleroom on 01823 332525 for further details.
