A RUN of the iconic Wisden Cricketers Almanack books, dating from the late 19th century, could sell for as much as £10,000 when they go under the Charterhouse hammer in their auction on Friday, July 28.

“Wisdens, as they are generally known, are the bible of cricket and considered to be the most famous sports reference book.” commented George Holtby. “It has taken many years to amass such an extensive run and the earlier the copy, generally the more expensive they become. Although I have never seen a first edition, which came out in 1864, rarely do you see copies as early as the ones we have been instructed to auction.”

The run of Wisdens at Charterhouse starts from 1890 through to 2005. Although the books are most known for their distinctive bright yellow covers, this format was not issued until 1938. Prior to this, they could be either salmon pink or buff coloured.

In the collection there are two volumes which stand out and are valued by Charterhouse at £2,000 for each book. These are the 1918 and 1919 copies and are very rare as few copies were printed after The Great War due to paper shortages.

Charterhouse is now accepting further entries for their July specialist auctions which include pictures, books and maps on July 28 and classic, vintage and modern supercars at Sherborne Castle on the 16th.
