The season is moving on and we will soon be into August. To keep cattle improving now is the time to think about supplementary feed at grass. Straight rolled barley, cake, home mix, whatever is your preference. But the cheapest time to feed cattle is at grass. A couple of kilos a day now will make all the difference before cattle start to lose flesh gained in June.

Busk Calves & Stirks (336): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a slightly increased entry was met by another good trade, especially for anything young or medium quality. Limited top quality on offer. Top price was £985 for a Limousin steer (10m) from Messrs TH & PM Bolt who also made £955 of another. A well farmed entry from Mr P Skelley saw prices to £960 for 10m old Charolais steers, when others in the same run sold to £920 x4 (9m) and £900 x2 (9m). Other Charolais from Mr P Attwell sold to £845 x4 (13m) and Mr B Calder to £840 (10m). Messrs TH & PM Bolt also topped the Blues with an 8m steer to £945 and with a second to £835. Messrs SM & JV Parsons & Jones £835.

Heifer trade slightly dearer with the gap between steers and heifers closing. Top price £970 for a 14m Angus from Mr E Gilbert. £860 Charolais (11m) from Mr P Skelley who also had others to £800 and £775. Blues also from Mr P Skelley to £845 and from Messrs TH & PM Bolt to £730.

Another good Friesian trade when better shaped beasts were on offer saw many prices in the £400 region to a top of £470.

Medium bulls £280-£350, extremely keen, smaller bulls from £200.

Heifer trade very lively indeed when Blues sold to £425 from Messrs GF & DV Bussell. Others £420 from Messrs JWO Marsh & Partners; £408, £402 and £392 from Messrs AJ & GD Bond and many over £350, not far behind the bulls. Charolais heifers £328 from Messrs SM & DM Turner. Limousins £320 (x2) from Messrs GJ Searle & Sons. Best heifers from £270, mediums £220 and small heifers £170-£220.

Tremendous interest in native breeds including a superb consignment of 10-16 week Herefords from Higher Farm (Manston) Ltd when bulls averaged £384 and heifers £330. As good a show of Herefords as we have seen for some time and topped at £455. Younger Herefords to £340. Weaners (48): Young small weaners in great demand. 9 w/o Gloucester Old Spots to £50 from Mr J Corsan and many others in the mid £43-£48 range. Stronger weaners/young stores to £85 from Mr TJ & Mrs SM Hobbs.

Stores (86): Generally the quality a little back but trade still standing strong. Heavier types to £162 from Mr S Loveless and others to £152. Mediums well sought, after £132 from Mr S Middleton and £120 from Mr J Morris. Breeders inpig sow £168 from Mr H Robbins.
