GREENSLADE Taylor Hunt’s Agricultural Department at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, reported another large entry within the region of 3,000 acres of standing straw being offered over two evenings at their annual auctions.
It was predicted that standing straw values would increase again this year, however the results achieved at auction were certainly unprecedented. Many farmers throughout the South West had seen their stocks deplete to zero at the end of last year which led to a packed crowd of eager bidders.
Auctioneer Tom Mellor, after the evening auctions commented: “Straw values leapt this year far beyond expectation, with the average for winter wheat in particular lifting some 50%. An enviable clearance rate of 100% was achieved for the wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape crops”.
Winter wheat crops averaged in the region of £70/acre. Winter barley averaged £68/acre, winter oats £64/acre, spring barley £58 and oilseed rape £34. The sales topped at a staggering £115/acre for a heavy crop of winter wheat at Wiveliscombe.
