THERE is plenty to interest all types of antiques fans at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s November sale, which takes place today (Thursday, November 2).

Among the items going under the hammer at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, will be a Chinese ice pail. Valuer Simon Rayner spotted it outside doing duty as a plant pot when he went on a recent probate visit!

The pail has a painted decoration depicting a procession of figures in a garden setting. It is guided at £200-£300.

In the furniture section there is an interesting 19th Century American walnut framed armchair with shaped plywood seat and back, stamped to the back 'GARDNERS PATENT MAY 21 1872'. Gardner & Co produced the chair. The patent refers to the one-piece plywood seat and back, an early use for this material. Similar chairs are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has a pre-sale estimate of £300-£500.

October’s sale featured an enormous George III bacon settle, which turned out to be one of the star performers at the monthly auction. This time the auctioneers have a large curved farmhouse settle with a tongue and groove back and a small glazed window. It has a guide price of £200-£300.

The sale will culminate in a large selection of books and maps – nearly 100 lots. One of the highlights is likely to be Robert Dighton’s Geography Bewitched! or, a droll Caricature Map of England and Wales. This is estimated at £200-£250.

The sale starts at 10am and is likely to run well into the afternoon.
