A BEAUTIFUL example of Arts and Crafts work is among the highlights of Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s next antiques auction on Thursday, December 7.

The striking enamel panel and unmarked silver brooch is attributed to Phoebe Anna Traquair – the first woman elected to the Royal Scottish Academy.

It is believed to date from around 1909 with the enamel depicting a slumbering figure with two angels in attendance, one angel playing a stringed instrument, all in a landscape, with pallion detail and highlights, in an elongated hexagonal bead and cord border mount, 5 cm by 4 cm overall.

This enamel is similar to the Traquair enamel panel, titled 'The Dream' in the Victoria & Albert collection, M198-1976, signed, titled and dated 1909 to the reverse.

This panel was part of an extensive donation to the V&A in 1976 from the artist's granddaughter Margaret Bartholomew.

The example to be offered at Greenslade Taylor Hunt is a reverse image of the same subject matter. The frame has similarities to a signed and dated pendant by Traquair titled 'The Awakening', 1903.

The auctioneers are indebted to Dr Elizabeth Cumming, of the University of Edinburgh, a historian and curator who writes on Scottish art and design, in identifying this work.

The piece has a pre-sale estimate of £1,200-£1,500.

On a more modest scale, but just as appealing is a pewter inkwell by Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co. This is guided at £120-£180.

The auction will also include seven pictures by ever-popular local artist Harry Frier. Among these are a view of Bridge Street and The Coal Orchard.

The antiques sale will be followed by the quarterly collectors’ sale on Friday, December 8. This will include a good collection of aviation prints signed by Second World War aircrew.

The auctioneers have a reputation for attracting excellent diecast model cars and the December sale will certainly deliver in this regard. A good section of British and German stamps is also anticipated.

Entries are currently being accepted for both sales.
