Prime & Untested Forward Cattle (154): UTM (136) & OTM Prime Cattle (6): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an excellent entry for our 11th South West Winter Fair. 38 haltered and 37 unhaltered cattle, along with 79 commercial cattle. Our grateful thanks to Mr Dickie Wright for judging the haltered and Miss Kim Daniels for judging the unhaltered.

The haltered championship was won by Mr P & Mrs L Calcraft of Payhembury, with an 18m Limousin heifer, which weighed 563kg and sold for £2,500 (444.1ppk) to Mr DG & Mrs E Lewis, Pumpsaint, Carmarthen. The Reserve was a 15m Limousin steer, which weighed 577kg and sold at £1550 (268.7ppk) from Messrs DE & SJ Cheacker to Puxton Park, Weston Super Mare.

Other leading steer prices were 247.5ppk (4th, Limousin, 570kg) Mr AGF Lockyer, East Huntspill; 244.5ppk (4th, Limousin, 650kg) Mr A & Mrs L Brand, Shepton Beauchamp; 241.5ppk (4th, Limousin, 632kg) Mr JE & Mrs LP Reason, Highbridge; 239.5ppk (2nd, Limousin, 546kg) Mr RB Cox, Bridgwater; 239.5ppk (2nd, Blue, 546kg) Messrs GS Briggs & Sons, Ash Priors. Commercial steers rose to 208ppk for a Limousin (634kg) from Mr PJ & Mrs BM Coles, Bridgwater. Commercial steers sold to £1,488.27 for a 798kg Limousin from Mr DW & Mrs AE Enticott, Ashbrittle.

Commercial heifers rose to 217ppk for a Limousin (563kg) from Mr PJ & Mrs BM Coles again. Commercial heifers sold to £1,376.77 for a 767kg Charolais from Messrs TL Greenshields & Son, Hawkchurch.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a short entry of cull cattle met a flier. Much improved on the week when many more could have been sold to advantage.

Top price suckler was 136.5ppk for a Blue cross cow from Mr SR Davis, Langport, when sucklers were generally in short supply. Devon cows at 132.5, 125.5 and 123.5ppk from Mr MGN West, Coombe Martin. South Devon at 128.5ppk from Mr DG Rogers, Winscombe. Simmental at 127.5ppk from Mr R & Mrs J Cook, Bridport.

Show Lambs (114): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report fewer show lambs forward than last year at 114 head sold to a very strong competitive trade. The overall Championship was won by Messrs Lockyer & Randell with Beltex sired lambs that sold to £150/head (341ppk) purchased by Farmers Fresh Ltd of Warwickshire. The Reserve Champions were exhibited by Messrs P & C Houldey and sold for £135/head (321ppk) also to Farmers Fresh Ltd. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a good quality entry for the dressed poultry sale with 41 forward. Overall Champion of the show went to Mr P Cole, Bagland Hill for an excellently presented 16 3/4 lb Stag Turkey which sold to £40. Top price of the day went to Mr M Curtis, Coombe Farm who sold a 25 lb turkey for £58. A good run of chickens sold to a top of £20 and ducks sold to £28. Champion pair and first prize in the cutters class (exceeding 175 kilo) was won by Master Paul Stone of Puriton and later sold at £250 (each) (£2.65 per kilo) to Puxton Ltd, Hewish, North Somerset.

First prize in the porkers class (under 174 kilos) was awarded to Messrs P & TA Reakes for a pair of gilts at £145 each (£1.74 per kilo). Second and third in the class was also awarded to P & JA Reakes selling at £145 and £115 each respectively.

Second prize in the porkers class to Mrs Tina Stone which sold at £134 each. Third in class to Mr L E Miller & Son.

The trade was down generally and there were very few customers for low yielding, young and frail heifers. Cows maintained recent good levels.

Suckler Cows, Calves and Stock Bulls (141): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very large December entry saw a similar trade to that of the dairy cattle through the same ring earlier in the day, where stronger quality types met a good demand but second quality is now much more difficult to place, especially older frail types.

The suckler ring was packed to the rafters with purchasers attracted by Nick Hill’s “Quaish” dispersal (see separate report below).

In the commercial section the better bulls attracted a good level of interest to £3000 for a Charolais from Messrs A & H Wylde. More commercial types to £1550 for a Charolais from Vigar Bros. Herefords to £1200 from Messrs RW & M Tolley. British Blue bulls to £1200 (69m) from Mr R Skelley.

A super small dispersal of Ruby Red Devons from Mr N & Mrs C Broomfield sold to £1700, £1450 and £1350 for cows with calves at foot and open for service.

Smart Limousin cross cows and calves to £1500 and British Blue cow and calves to £1440 from Messrs EH & RL Leyshon, Neath. Other leading prices included £1460 and £1380 for 2 Limousin cross heifers and calves from Mr FJ Tucker; £1320 for Charolais cross cows and calves from Messrs Vigar Bros. Angus cow and calves from the same Vendor to £1290.

Incalf Limousin cross Spring calving cows sold to £1650 from Messrs JC & JCM Carroll. Swedish Red cross cows to £1150 from PJLS Farms. Limousin cross incalf heifers from Messrs EH & RL Leyshon to £1120, when Blues rose to £1100 from the same Vendor.

A super run of incalf Longhorns from Mr TR Michell of Cornwall saw prices rise to £900 and £890 (x2) attracting a lot of interest.

Maiden heifers to £1800 (x2) for pedigree South Devons from the Tully Partnership, Brixham.

Quaish to 5200gns (x3) at Sedgemoor Auction Centre. Saturday 9th December was the date of the “Quaish” Sale of British Limousins, when Nick & Lisa Hill & Family sold their show winning cattle, having relinquished the tenancy on their council farm. The exceptionally well turned out cattle were greeted by a packed ring, who witnessed the first cow in the ring Quaish Flower sell at 5200gns with her May born bull calf at foot to Messrs DC & SA Martin of Helston Cornwall. Matching this was Quaish Iris who sold with the only heifer calf at foot on the day to the Butt family of Shepton Mallet. Also at 5200gns was the 5 year old incalf cow Quaish Heebeegeebee by Culnagechan Firestar and out of Quaish Bee. She is due in January to her 3rd calf and was purchased by the Davis family of Glanyfer Wales for their Glencross herd.

The two incalf heifers sold on the day from the 2017 show team realised 5000gns for Lottie and 4500gns for Livingthedream, both secured by Mr B Quant of Newton Abbot to found a new pedigree herd. He also took home the only yearling heifer of the day Quaish Magic at 3000gns.

A day when many left empty handed, the following excellent averages were generated:-

Forward Stores (135): Another quality first class entry sold to a strong competitive trade throughout. Top price £144 for an excellent run of pigs from Mr RJ Sparshott, Blandford. Others to £124 for a good run from Tina Stone and £124 from Mr RJ Compton from Bradford on Avon.
