Suckler Cows, Calves & Stock Bulls (126): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a good entry of sucklers for our February catalogued sale saw an excellent trade throughout. A lot of incalf cows, including 75 from Victorian Barn gave purchasers a great choice of Spring calvers. All heifers due to their 2nd calves and incalf to Limousin or Charolais sires. British Blues topped at £1280 x2. Others to £1250, £1230 and £1200 x2. Herefords topped at £1250 and 2 x £1210. Limousin cross to £1070.

A good consignment from North Dairy Farm Ltd saw Charolais cows and steer calves to £1800.

A run of Charolais incalf heifers to £1100 x4 from Mr SL King, Ilchester and non pedigree Devon cows due in the Spring to £800 with incalf heifer to £790.

Store Lambs (2160): A larger entry of 2160 store lambs sold to an overall easier trade for all forward not helped by an overall lack of quality. The best sold to £75.50 from Messrs Padfield & Dyke. Ram Lambs sold as store lambs are to be declared. Those lots so declared to not contain any ram lambs, which are found post sale to contain undeclared ram lambs, will attract a 25% reduction in the sale price of any ram lambs found. Similarly Cryptorchids are to be declared.

Grazing Ewes and Rams (1289): A much larger entry of 1289 grazing ewes and rams after last week’s flyer, sold to an overall easier trade as numbers have flooded out nationwide this week. However, the best remain keenly contested. Rams sold to £104 from Mr M Brown. Goats (74): Another large entry of 74 goats sold to a continuing strong trade, when nannies sold to £80 and £75.50 from Mr RG, AJ & JA Habberfield and wethers to £70 from Mr SA Hyslop, to average £47.74.

Orphan Lambs (46): A good entry of orphans sold to a similar trade as previous weeks. Top price £35 from Mr J Jarman. Other £30 from Mr T Sandiford. Overall average £21.74.

Top price pence per kilo 232.5ppk for a 548kgs Limousin cross heifer from Messrs J & S Vinnicombe & Son who also had other Limousin cross heifers which sold to 225ppk (564kgs) 222.5ppk (600kgs) grossing £1,335 (top price £ per head) and Limousin cross steer @ 214.5ppk (554kgs). Generally good butchers heifers 200 pence plus. Well fleshed continental cross steers 185-195ppk range, native breed steers only 10 pence behind and British Friesians to 170ppk. Cattle on the lean side with plenty of time continue to sell at a premium over the rate for further finishing, even if not farm assured, provided at least 90 days clear run.
