THE UK Government plans to ban gas-powered heating in homes by the year 2050.

Gas cookers would also be done away with as part of its new “Clean Growth Strategy”.

In a bid to secure a more sustainable future, the Government is laying out £2.5bn worth of moves to cut fossil fuels in homes, businesses and transport.

Climate Change Minister Claire Perry said: “By focusing on clean growth, we can cut the cost of energy, drive economic prosperity, create high-value jobs and improve our quality of life.”

The Government has already made progress with its plan to have smart meters rolled out to every home by 2020.

It also made a promise in July to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

This follows the 2008 Climate Change Act, which introduced a commitment to make the UK’s carbon emissions 80 per cent lower than those of 1990.

Ms Perry added that stamp duty could be cut for energy-efficient residences, in a bid to help homeowners install insulation.

“That would be one of the incentives,” she said on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme.

“We also need to look at building regulations.”

Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clarke said Britain is setting an example for other nations.

He added: “The world is moving from being powered by polluting fossil fuels to clean energy.

“It’s as big a change as the move from the age of steam to the age of oil and Britain is showing the way.”
