THERE be dragons at the Brewhouse - as well as some scary demons, a couple of strange magicians and the odd giant crab or two.

The theatre is preparing to welcome some right royal and magical guests next week for its month-long production of Merlin’s Apprentice.

Forget the recent BBC series Merlin - Merlin’s Apprentice is a musical drama with its roots firmly in the west country legends of Arthur and Merlin and that sword in the stone.

The thrilling family show is a first for the Brewhouse and the ideal Christmas treat with songs, dance and dazzling battle scenes.

Philip Vouzey who plays Merlin (minus the beard) is excited about the production. He says: “It’s not a panto with corny jokes.

“But it is a great show that everyone can enjoy, from four to 104. The audience will recognise the characters and the story which is based on the more ancient stories that people in Somerset will be familiar with.”

Merlin’s Apprentice tells the story of young Arthur’s rise from homeless orphan to King of all England under the guidance of the legendary magician, Merlin.

However, taking the throne is more difficult than taking the sword from the stone, for Arthur must face a powerful enemy - Morgana.

Taking on that role is Emma Whittaker, 23, who says her character is “very misunderstood””

“She’s not a baddie baddie but she does feel cheated simply because she is a girl,” says Emma taking a break from rehearsals.

“She believes she is the rightful apprentice but then this boy, Arthur, comes along and steals her destiny. Morgana is not the sort of person just to stand idly by and watch him take over.”

West country actor, Will Trafford, 19, is the unfortunate Arthur who learns the hard way that its not wise to cross Morgana.

“That’s his problem, he’s not very wise, not even very bright,” says Will.

“Arthur removes the sword but he has no idea how to be a king or what that title means. He’s nice if a bit dim and Morgana is rather angry at what he’s done. I’m really excited to play Arthur. Coming from Exeter, I grew up with the legend of Merlin so it’s a dream come true to have this role.”

Merlin’s Apprentice runs from Saturday, December 5 to Saturday, December 12 with tickets costing £18 for adults, £14 for children. Go to ww.thebrewhouse.net or call 01823 283244.
