STEPPENWOLF released a single called ‘Born To Be Wild’ which is the antithesis to Gardeners’ World presenter Joe Swift who in a self deprecating way described himself as ‘Born To Be Retired’.

He joked he felt liked this as he enjoyed playing golf and doing some gardening - what many see as the staples of retirement.

This tale along with many more will be available for you to enjoy in May when he brings his show Joe Swift: A Man About The Garden to the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton.

The horticultural RHS Chelsea Gold Medal Winner described himself as ‘easy going and happy go lucky’ and he comes across like this in an interview with his insightful comments and thoughts about the world of gardening.

Joe doesn’t believe you have to ‘have an eye’ for design when it comes to creating a garden as he feels it is something which can be taught.

He said: “Having an eye for design helps but there are some principals which anyone can learn. One of the biggest problems is people cannot get around the problem of having a rectangular lawn and a rectangular garden.

Somerset County Gazette:

“What you need with a garden is to have movement.

“You do not need plants up against a fence, it looks like the worst disco in the world.

“Get the plants onto the dancefloor. There are some simple ways of breaking up a garden. You need to keep the eye moving in the garden .

One of the gardening achievements which Joe is most proud of is winning a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2012.

Joe said: “I had done items on the Chelsea Flower Show but had never competed in it. It was like commentating on the FA Cup Final but never playing in it. So when the opportunity arose I grabbed it.

“By the time I finished I could have cried. I would have cried if I had won a bronze medal.”

- Joe Swift: A man about the garden will be at the Brewhouse Theatre on May 3.
