LYRICS about the everyday which encapsulate the small details and minutia of life glow brightly in the folk music created by Somerset singer/songwriter Kitty Macfarlane.

Her wistful words come alive in her songs such as Wrecking Days, Bus Song and Lamb, which are all on her latest EP Tide & Time.

Kitty is creating her own niche in folk music by brining a fresh vigour to folk music which can be for many non folk fans be dry and uninteresting.

Her song writing and style of singing are creating new fans of folk and giving her the chance as she said ‘to express herself ’.

Kitty said: “For me the subject of the song has to come first. It is the vehicle for writing words down and a way to convey a message.

The words are important to me as they are a vehicle for a message.

“Both my parents are artists and creative people. I could have been a poet but I chose music as on outlet as I like words so much and for me music is the best way of expressing myself. I love folk music, I listen to it a lot from traditional to contemporary. I use the word folk loosely but I would describe it as folksy.

“Music is special to me as I started studying it when I was 11-years-old.

“I had guitar lessons from a teacher who did not teach me theory rather he asked me what song I wanted to learn.

Somerset County Gazette:

“Two weeks later I was on a stage performing and I enjoy the experience. From that moment on I have loved being on stage and singing.

“I can’t help but look at the audiences eyes so I am starring at them and not over their heads. I can see people who have their eyes closed and are listening intensely and emotionally involved in the moment.

“When I went to university I studied English and French and by the time I left I noticed a big change in my songwriting. It had become a lot more like poetry or what I would call lyrical poems.

“I love looking for the small details in life and looking for the beauty in every day life. It is a way of looking at the wider world and and universe and seeing your place in it.”

You can catch Kitty at Ilminster Arts Centre on May 12 and at Halsway Manor on June 3.
