ONE Somerset entertainer has taken her love for musical theatre to tread the boards on a different stage.

Amanda Ham from Burnhamon- Sea, who is better known as ‘The Singing Angel’, does not appear at a theatre or an arts centre rather she puts on a show at old folks homes and care homes across the county.

Amanda wanted to be a performer from the early age of four when she first learnt how to dance. By the time she was a teenager she attended the Guildford School of Acting at the University of Surrey.

This lead her to sing with the BBC Concert Orchestra and on the West End stage in different musical shows.

When she returned back to Somerset she worked with her mum at the family run Curtain Call School of Performing Arts in Highbridge for 10 years, where they taught children a variety of acting skills such as modern tap.

Amanda said: “I really enjoyed teaching the children as it really gave them confidence.

“The performing arts was really good training for them as it transformed them as well as letting them enjoy themselves.

They were able to enter competitions which was heart warming and many of the skills they learnt were transferable to other jobs in life.”

Amanda sings songs from a variety of eras ranging from the 1940s to the 60s and 70s.

Somerset County Gazette:

Explaining why she has been putting on her show at care homes and old folks homes since October 2016, Amanda said: “To be honest they are places I have always been since I was four years old. I remember going to them when I was at school to put on a concert and to sing songs.

It has always been part of my background so I thought if I could do something which would make a viable business idea.

“It is not about the money, for me it is about my passion and love for music.

“I feel the power of music transcends all barriers and gets people singing along.

“It allows people to open up and for a little bit and they clap along or sing along to the songs.”
