IT’S time for a hero to step up to the oche, throw some arrows and for you to watch Somerset darts champion Rex the King.

Somerset-based Wassail Theatre Company is touring its next show entitled Rex the King from May 18 to June 4 at pubs around the county.

It will be in a number of venue such as The White Hart, Wiveliscombe; Pitcher & Piano, Taunton and The Brewer’s Arms, South Petherton.

Rex the King is the story of a Somerset darts champion who ruled the world, but lost it all – a theatrical tale that’s witty, uplifting and ludicrously tragic.

The lead actor playing Rex is James Peake who trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

James said: “I will happily pick up the darts and have a game. The problem is during rehearsals I have missed the board more than I have hit it.

But I have taken the game to heart. People will meet Rex at the beginning of the story when he is starting out and then people will get to the crux of the story. The play is is a mix of drama and tragedy and comedy. It is outlandish and done in a fun way. It is a good ripping yarn and one of the exciting things is to be taking the play to pubs.

“We are taking it (the play) out into the heart of the community.”

Rex The King is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and South Somerset District Council.

The production previews on May 18, at Inn the Square in West Coker (near Yeovil).

It will be at the Pitcher & Piano in Taunton on May 31 at 8pm.
