AS the writer/director of the Simon & Garfunkel Story, Dean Elliott firmly believes ‘authenticity is the key’ is the show’s success.
He said: “It is vital authenticity is the key. Simon & Garfunkel are revered by many people.
“This could not be a pastiche, you can’t ham it up, they are too highly regarded.
“Musically, it has to be authentic. We wanted the harmonies to sound like they would have in 1967 and we wanted the show to have a ‘60s feel to it.
“We use video footage and even adverts from the period to help make it an authentic representation of the 1960s.”
Dean spent a year writing and work shopping the play until it was perfect.
Speaking about getting it spot on, Dean said: “One of the major problems with writing the show was it has to be in a chronological order.
“This means you have to have peaks and troughs which need to build to a crescendo.
“You want to end on a high and for people to leave the theatre singing and feeling happy.”
During the past five years, The Simon & Garfunkel Story has exploded to become a world wide phenomenon and can be seen in the UK, USA, New Zealand and Canada to name a few countries where the show is receiving and has been given fantastic reviews.
Dean said: “To say I am pleased with how it has gone would be an understatement.
“It has been a million times better than I could ever have expected.
“When the show began, I thought it would last a couple of months but, five years later, we are still touring and still going to new places. We will soon be opening in the Lyric Theatre in the West End.”
