- Sophia Ford Coppola’s fifth feature film, the much-anticipated The Beguiled is a psychological thriller set in the deep south.

Based on the 1966 novel by Thomas Cullinan, The Beguiled has won over critics for its re-shaping of the tale into a modern Gothic.

The film sees an injured soldier (Colin Farrell) in the American civil war stumble upon a girls’ boarding school in an opulent mansion in Virginia. He is taken in, ostensibly to recuperate, by formidable headmistress Martha (Nicole Kidman) and her small group of students (Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence). Soon, though, dark undercurrents are revealed, and it becomes clear that the women have ulterior motives.

Awarded the best director prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Coppola gives us a film crackling with tension. Contrasting the psychological battleground of the mansion with the sounds of the raging Civil War, Coppola creates a sumptuous melodrama which will, indeed, beguile you.

You can see the film at The Brewhouse in Taunton.
