BACK in the 1970s the BBC regularly broadcast a entertainment programme called The Good Old Days.

It was a variety show filmed at the Leeds City Varieties where artists recreated an authentic atmosphere of the Victorian–Edwardian music hall with songs and sketches of the era performed by present-day performers in the style of the original artistes.

The chairman who introduced the acts was Leonard Sachs, who became known for his elaborate, erudite introductions of the performers.

If he had been introducing Taunton Amateur Operatic Society's production of Oliver! he might have said: "Ladies and Gentlemen welcome on stage a vociferous, vigorous, vermilion, vista of vibrations and vitality (audience Ohhh), the visionary visions of Taunton...."

Taunton Amateur Operatic Society (TAOS) put on a show to impress the eye and reward the senses.

Oliver! is a colourful cornucopia of a musical carousel which is full of tunes which you know so well including 'Food, Glorious Food', 'Pick a Pocket or two', 'I'd do anything', 'As long as he needs me' and 'Who will buy'.

Each musical scene bristles with invention.

This is not a West End show but the stage at the Brewhouse is used to maximum effect and creates a much bigger lavish musical than you would expect to see.

The whole case performed with gusto.

Even the extras gave it there all and their efforts were noticed by the audience who were suitably impressed.

The main characters were played by: Freddie Eagle as Oliver, Nigel McBrayne as Mr Bumble, Kirtsy Newman as the Artful Dodger, Jerry Hardingham as Fagin, Beth Cox as Nancy and Philip Wells as Bill Sykes.

From my seat the crowds favourites on the night were Jerry Hardingham as Fagin and Kirtsy Newman as the Artful Dodger.

Both of whom deserved the praise heaped on them for such consummate and crowd pleasing performances.

This was Kirsty's second show with TAOS and Jerry's first performance in Oliver! since 1977. Both were outstanding.

Catch this family entertaining show before it finishes its run-it won't disappoint.

TAOS's production of Lionel Bart's Oliver! is at the Brewhouse Theatre until May 6.
