THE award-winning and visually beautiful film Timbuktu from Mauritania will be screened by The Regal Film Society at the Regal Theatre in Minehead on Tuesday February 9 at 7.30pm. As well as winning a string of awards, the film was nominated for an Oscar, BAFTA and the prestigious French Palme d’Or.
Set against Mali’s cultural struggle with Islamic militants, Timbuktu is a passionate cri de coeur against violence and intolerance. The film is panoramic in form and slips between stories and characters, building up its effect while avoiding the worthiness and emotional manipulation of much current affairs cinema – it is richly poetic, witty and highly entertaining.
Tickets for the subtitled film, which is open to film society members and their guests, may be booked in advance at the Regal Box Office (Tel: 01643 706430)
