7.30pm - Heathfield Year 11 Drama Festival: Hope St. Fast-paced and dramatic, this play follows the separate lives of the inhabitants of a single, ordinary street and how their fortunes hinge on the outcome of their Saturday night lottery tickets. Moving, funny and contemporary, these stories explode on to the stage delivering a compelling snapshot of how we live our lives today. Tickets: £6.50 / £5.50 Concessions / £4.50 Students.

8am - 6pm, Catch this marvellous exhibition by local artist Sue Gunn at Taunton library before it ends this Sunday. Inspired by local colour; architectural forms and landscapes this exhibition is a must for all art lovers and will inspire and brighten any dull day.

Friday, January 29

11am - artisan craft fair meets monthly at the Washford Inn, Washford. Wonderful local artisans who create for pleasure and love to share with others. There will be a warm welcome a chance to catch up with friends meet new ones and of course buy some unique gifts, along with that all important coffee and cake.

7.30pm - legendary West Country anarcho punk band Citizen Fish come to Taunton as part of Fuelled By Cider’s regular gig programme at the Winchester Arms. Support acts on the night will be local punk duo 51st State and Atterkop from Bristol.

Saturday, January 30

9am - why not take part in a free friendly 5K family run every Saturday of the year? It’s not a race but a timed run along the same off-road course each week marshalled by volunteers. 11am - 3pm, Barrington Court presents an inspirational collection of photographs from the entrants to the 2014 international garden photographer of the year competition. Brighten up the winter months with a visit to this incredible selection of images from some of the most skilled and talented photographers from around the world. Booking not needed. Children welcome, assistance dogs only. General admission prices apply.

7pm - family disco at the Lawns social club, Mary Street, Taunton. Adults £2.50, children free. Starring the Brannigans Roadshow.

7pm - world-famous virtuoso violinist Tasmin Little, whose recording of Lark Ascending is an all-time best-seller, visits Taunton with Europe’s finest chamber orchestra, the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Tasmin who has appeared at the BBC’s Royal Albert Hall Proms many times will be playing everyone’s favourite Mozart Violin Concerto No 4.

The wonderful programme also includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3, Haydn’s Symphony No 49 and Grieg’s much-loved Holberg Suite. St. Mary Magdalene’s church, Taunton.

8pm - Moscow Drug Club play The David Hall, South Petherton. Combining their original material with songs by the likes of Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Bertolt Brecht, Moscow Drug Club provides an intoxicating and intimate musical experience.

7.30pm - Hal Cruttenden. Host of Live At The Apollo and star of Radio 4, the great Hal is back ranting about the real evils of the modern world, like over sharing on social media and the 5:2 diet. The Brewhouse.

Sunday, January 31

11am - 2pm, the annual Somerset potato day and seed fair takes places at Caryford Community Hall, Maggs Lane, Ansford, Castle Cary. Over 80 varieties of seed potatoes for sale by the single tuber. Everything for the kitchen garden, heritage seeds, garlic, onions and more. Free admission and ample parking. Refreshments available.

2.30pm - the first concert at Dillington House for 2016 comes from the internationally renowned Vogler Quartet. This Berlin ensemble had its beginnings at the Hanns Eisler Musical Academy and is renowned for its intelligent approach to chamber music. The programme will include Haydn, Brahms and Stravinsky.

Monday, February 1

A jewelled and enamelled casket depicting medieval England’s most infamous murder is going on display at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton. The Becket Casket, made in about 1180, held relics of St Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. He was murdered in 1170 by knights who had Somerset and Devon roots and were followers of King Henry II. The precious object is being loaned by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and will be displayed at the Museum of Somerset until Saturday, April 2.

7.30pm - Girls Like That - the SPACE Company present Evan Placey’s urgent and explosive new script that was named Best Play for Young Audiences at the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards 2015. Eye-opening and often uncomfortably honest, it explores the pressures on young people today in a world of advancing technology.

Tuesday, February 2

2pm - races at Taunton Racecourse, England’s youngest jumps racecourse and one of the most beautifully located in the country, with outstanding views to the wooded slopes of the Blackdown Hills, yet only a few minutes drive from the M5 and the centre of Taunton. 10am - 5pm, New Dimensions: Contemporary Art Inspired by Hidden Collections. Objects from the museum stores are being vividly re-imagined in film, photography, sculpture, textiles and poetry.

Featuring work by six local artists: Jenny Graham, Chris Dunseath, Jacy Wall, Laura Aish, Ralph Hoyte and Richard Tomlinson. Museum of Somerset. (runs until April 16)

7.30pm - Becket's murder: The Somerset Connection, a talk by Professor Nicholas Vincent from the University of East Anglia at the Museum of Somerset.
