Hip-hop music mogul P Diddy has been released on bail from a Los Angeles County jail after an alleged assault at UCLA, where his son plays football.

Jail records show Diddy – whose real name is Sean Combs – was released after posting bail late Monday night, several hours after his afternoon arrest.

The jail records show that his bail was 160,000 dollars, but sheriff’s officials reached by phone said he posted 50,000 dollars. The reason for the discrepancy wasn’t clear.

UCLA police say the rapper was arrested after an assault at the athletic facilities with a weight-room kettlebell. They did not identify a victim or say any more about the circumstances.

Diddy’s son Justin Combs is a defensive back on the Bruin football team, which was having workouts on campus.

The university released a statement about the arrest: “Shortly after 12.30pm today, Sean Combs (also known as Diddy) was arrested at UCLA’s Acosta Athletic Training Complex on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, which was a kettlebell. No one was seriously injured and UCPD is investigating.

“Combs is expected to be transported to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Centre later this evening.”

It added: “Football coach Jim Mora issued the following statement: ‘I’m thankful that our staff showed the level of professionalism that they did in handling this situation. This is an unfortunate incident for all parties involved. While UCPD continues to review this matter, we will let the legal process run its course and refrain from further comment at this time’.”

The statement was later updated with: “UCPD has updated the charges to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of making terrorist threats and one count of battery. Combs has been booked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Centre.”
