THERE was way back in the 1970s an advert for Pepsi.

It went: ‘Lipsmacking, thirst quenching, ace tasting, motivating, cool buzzing, high talking, fast living, ever giving, cool fizzing...”

The modern day equivalent of someone who would be fast talking would be Sean Kelly, who presents Storage Hunters.

It was first broadcast in the USA from 2011 to 2013 and show in the UK on Dave.

A domestic British version, featuring Kelly, started broadcasting in 2014 and a fifth series to air from April 2016.

In his own inimitable style he described Storage Hunters as a ‘Mixture of Antiques Roadshow meets WWF’ and ‘as a modern day treasure hunt’.

All are true as once the buyer has bought the contents of a storage locker they do not know what is in it until they have had a good look through the boxes and bags.

Somerset County Gazette:

Speaking about the show, Sean said: “I think there is a game show element to the show as you never know what is behind the door.

“Are they going to make a profit or are they going to loose money?

I was doing an auction and sold the contents of a storage locker for $4,000.

“And afterwards there was a big fight between two men and I thought this would make a great show. It was Antiques Roadshow and WWF.

“The next auction I carried out I tapped it and then tried to convince the powers that be in television this would make a good show.

"If people buy a locker, do they make money or loose money?

“That is all part of the thrill as you do not know what is going to happen.

“It is a gamble, a modern kind of treasure hunt. At the end of the day what people are doing is a gamble as you do not know how much you will make until the contents are sold.”

“Doing the show is so much fun.”

Now Sean is aiming to combine his love of being an auctioneer and being a comic in his new stage show.

Somerset County Gazette:

You can find out how this is working out when he comes to Somerset.

He will be at the Brewhouse Theatre, in Taunton, on July 15.

This will be a night of comedy and charity auction.

Sean has led a crazy life, so be prepared to learn a hell of a lot more about his unusual story in this raw and funny show.

With hilarious tales, he’s done everything from holding a top secret military clearance and serving a combat tour in Iraq, catching shoplifters as an undercover store detective in Italy, travelling to over 80 countries around the world, headlining the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and with all of this, has still managed 25 years of marriage to his wife Lori.

Speaking about his time as a comic before appearing on television, he said: “Before I did this show I was a stand-up comedian and as such I have a deep love for being a stand-up comic.

“When I first started I was full of nerves and I hoped people were laughing with me and not at me.

“I started out talking to the audience so they were involved in the act.

“I have learnt to relax and go with it and if someone does heckle I can just get on with it.

“That is what I did as well as being an auctioneer, which was my living. I used to get up on stage and do my act. I really loved getting up on stage and making people laugh.

Somerset County Gazette:

“I used to do seven shows a week, three on a Friday and four on a Saturday.

“I did this every single week for eight years.

“Once you get used to it you do not even think about what you are doing.

“I think being a stand-up comic is the best training you can get in life. It gives you so much confidence.

“It was just so much fun, especially when you get in the zone.

“What I want people who come to the show to do is bring a cheeky item from home which they do not want and we will auction it off as all proceeds going to Help for Heroes.”
