BEETHOVEN and Schubert are celebrated by one of the world’s most widely travelled chamber ensembles at Taunton’s Castle Hotel next week.
Starting on Friday, February 21, the Chilingirian Quartet, above, are giving four evening and morning concerts.
Violinists Levon Chilingirian and Ronald Birks, viola player Susie Mészáros and cellist Stephen Orton are in their fourth decade playing together.
They will perform middle-period quartets by Beethoven and Schubert.
The first concert is at 6pm on Friday with a performance of Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.59 No.2 in E minor ‘Rasumovsky’, and String Quartet Op.127 in E flat.
On Saturday at 11am, they take on Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.74 in E flat ‘Harp’, and Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor D810, ‘Death & the Maiden’.
The third concert is on Saturday evening, bringing together Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.95 in F minor ‘Serioso’, plus two of Schubert’s works – ‘Quartettsatz’ D703; Schubert, String Quartet in G, D887 – at 6pm.
The final concert, at 11am on Sunday February 23, sees the quartet play the String Quartet in A minor, D804 ‘Rosamunde’, by Schubert, and Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.59 No.3 in C, ‘Rasumovsky’.
Tickets for individual concerts cost £24 for morning performances and £25 for evening concerts, including an interval drink.
