THE redevelopment of Coal Orchard could be a great idea, but sadly it has not been properly thought through.

I was delighted to see, when I visited the exhibition at St James's Church that the Brewhouse was, in the words of the developers, "to be the centrepiece of the development".

Unfortunately there were no handouts to take away and study.

We understand that there will be 35 dwellings, in addition to shops and restaurants.

At the present time there are some 170 (or thereabouts) car parking spaces in the Brewhouse/Coal Orchard car park. The proposal is to reduce this number to 50.

Quite rightly, 10 of these spaces will be allocated to the disabled, leaving 40 spaces for the occupants of the 35 proposed dwellings, those wishing to park for existing shops nearby, visitors to the adjacent doctors' surgery and some residents of Pegasus Court.

Where will people park on dark, wet, winter nights when they attend evening performances in the enlarged new Brewhouse?

Somerset County Gazette:

There is already insufficient space for those who do not wish to walk from car parks further away. I, and many others who enjoy attending performances at the Brewhouse are in our 70s and 80s.

I was glibly and thoughtlessly told at the exhibition that the new Firepool site or Priory Car Parks were handy.

Please will the developers give more thought to accessibility to this proposed "centre of culture" because if they don't then the project will fail and the Brewhouse will close.
