THE story of Maxx Cordy, who cut his long hair after enduring years of bullying and being labelled ‘a girl’, is a depressing tale – but sadly, not an isolated case.
As the parent of a 22-month-old, I am constantly surprised and enraged by the amount of casual gender stereotyping on display, well, everywhere you look.
Next time you are in a supermarket, compare the ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ clothing sections.
You will find a sea of pink and words like ‘beautiful’ and ‘glamour’ in the ‘girls’ area, while boys are dressed in blue, with words like ‘adventure’ emblazoned across their chests.
Think about that for a moment. Why are girls not ‘allowed’ to wear blue? Why are only boys ‘adventurous’? And why have separate sections at all?
And this is not the only example of gender stereotyping constantly on show in society.
I fear for my child.
And I didn’t need to tell you what sex they are. It makes no difference.
